Back to all of the swim strategy talk:

My husband and I were competitive swimmers (husband was collegiate level, I should have been but that's another story). In most triathlon swims we are usually the first 1-5 in our gender, minimally. Usually 1st or 2nd out of the swim. I'm not making time predictions for Lake Placid, BUT, reasonably, we COULD go under 1 hour or more in the swim if we really wanted. My husband wants to start as far up as possible, me, I'm a little skeptical of that approach, but still leaning towards it. My husband played water polo in college as well, so he's pretty good and battling others, I'd say I'm okay at it for a female.

After seeing some of the pictures (thanks for sharing!!) I'm thinking that getting ahead of the majority of the chaos would be the best approach. I'd rather battle the people up front than have to swim over others if I started out further back. Not sure about where to place as far as close to the cable, or further to the right (I double checked the Pythagorean theorem as well, and it's true: only a difference of 5-6 meters!; of course, that requires you swim a straight line and maintain that angle).

So, advice from other stronger swimmers/those with experience with this mass chaos start. Good idea to start as far up as possible? In order to get that spot, are we going to have to tread water for a while?

Thanks! --Annie

Annie - Last year there were 2,456 racers that went into the water (including pros) at the start of IMLP. 109 of those folks went under 1 hour* on the swim. 14 of those 109 were Pros separated out in an earlier wave from us age groupers. With your kind of speed I would definitely start right under the swim flags, and next to the dock so you can jump on the cable immediately. You will have clear water and very fast feet to jump on.

Of course I may not be the best person to take advice from - I was expecting a 1:10 swim and lined up under the flags about 30 meters from the dock. I was sans wetsuit and absolutely got murdered by my wetsuited brethren. I went 1:20; but the first half of the first loop felt like I was swimming vertically in the water.

I went into the water about 5 minutes after the pros and tread water right under the flags for several minutes. It seemed like the flag line only got crowded with less than 5 minutes to go before the start. It is fun to be out there and I will be there again!

*Last year was an oddball year as it was not wetsuit legal for AG or Kona slots - so a lot of the fastest folks were wetsuitless of course. You may want to check the enhanced results from 2010 to see what it is like in a wetsuit-legal year. That link goes to a page where you can download excel spreadsheets from IM races with all kinds of interesting data not provided directly by WTC. Sort 'em to your hearts content!

The swim was actually nice today! It started as cold but after a couple of minutes my body was acclimitize to the temp. Of course I had a wetsuit on and I have no way of knowing the temp but definitely low 60s. There are 3lanes of buoys out there so I just picked one. The guys said that the course was set up for the boat and it is 1.5long so i did 3k. The cable you can spot it real quick. The water is clear. Coming from a big city mirror lake is a heaven to me. I swallowed quiet a bit of water but it was clean so i didn't mind. A little windy but no swells out there. Too bad I didn't get to meet the other BTers out there today. But tomorrow I'll be doing one loop of the running course in my Toronto triathlon club gear with my bright yellow newton shoes. There'll be a marathon in town tomorrow too so it might be a little hard to spot me. I did one loop today and it was much easier than yesterday!!!!

Back from LP early.  Swam Friday night before the storm. Headed out Saturday morning got 13.1 miles into the ride headed down the Keene descent and and had a front wheel blow out at 30 mph. After a huge wreck I visited the LP ER and ended up with 9 stitches in my hand, alot of road rash and a severely brusied hip. No swimming for a week the doctor said. I as able to do 1 hr on the trainer after the crash just to keep my hip moblie. Taking today off and hopefully will be back at something tomorrow.

What was funny is the crash was not my fault a flat is a flat but at 30 mph on the front wheel there was no saving it.

A EN Camp member came by saw the police and ambulance and I heard him say "That will sure make you slow down!"

I was riding the shoulder as I was supposed to be and had on Specialized Armadillo tires and still flated the roads are bad. Its to bad this happened by "God works all things for Good."

If you are riding in LP the police are starting to ticket people if they are riding 2 and 3 abreast or in the middle of the rode. Triathletes are going us a bad name up there because they come in and think they rule the roads.

Good luck training

We always share bike porn, how about a little shoe porn instead:

Shoe Porn

Probably just about my last new thing before Lake Placid - I just got a new pair of Sidi T3s with the new integrated speedplay sole which allows you to get rid of the adapter plate and thus moves the shoe a little closer to the spindle. It also saves a WHOPPING 11g per shoe (almost 1/2 of gel packet for the pair!) So I should be killing it up the climbs from now on. I went in to my fitter this morning to check my fit with them - we dropped the seat on my road bike by a couple of mm but interestingly he elected to leave the tri bike the same. I'll have an easy 1.5 hour bike (after OWS) with the wife tomorrow to break them in a little, then a 4 hour/1:45 brick in the rain on Sunday that should completely ruin that fancy white patent leather finish.

While I was there I also picked up several cases of premixed Perform at half price - i guess it is about time to start drinking that yucky stuff in training. Still trying to decide on my marathon shoes - Nike quit making my favorites (of course) so now I am trying a couple of alternatives. The brick this weekend should help me decide. hmmmm - New bike shoes AND new running shoes this weekend. I'll let you know if that is a good idea or not...

Anybody else changing anything up in the last 6 weeks or are you all dialed in?

I just did a practice swim and bike with my supersuit along with the compression and cool sleeves.  Things seem to be going good there.  I just got new shoes 2 weeks ago so I'm breaking them in now which appear to be good as well.  My most recent purchases has been Louis Garneau Vortice Black Knight Helmet.  I figure with the intimidation factor along with the aero benefits how can you go wrong.  I'm trying to dial the fit on that (I have a huge noggin).  The other purchase was Torhans aero hydration system.  With that I'm working on trying to fill it on the fly.  (Will be recruiting the kids to hand me bottles and I'll try to empty them as fast as possible then I'll throw the empties in the neighbors yard, I'm using Bobby's get out of jail free card and told him "Hey don't you know I'm training for an Ironman").  I think that is it for purchases for me.  The one thing I have been thinking about is a hat for the run.  What are people doing visors or hats?  I can't decide, I've never really worn a visor before, but think it could be beneficial for keeping my head a little cooler.

Tdotnew2tri - 2012-06-08 9:02 PM Hey guys here's ny.little report as my eyes are getting heavier. Weather was 42f this morning when we left at 7:30. No wind until I climbed to Wilmington. I was in the first wave and the people in my wave are wayyyy faster than my pace lol. My first time here so my first impression is It's beautiful out here!!!! If you haven't been here I recommend driving the course before hand esp the descent part cause that's where the pretty stuff is mostly. When u ride it u won't have the time to see the river or lake on your right or even the mini falls coming out of the mountain. Coming out of town there is a climb but to me It's not a false flat! I saw the uphill coming and felt it. The roads kinda shittyw cause of the cracks and loose sands. The descent is a bit crazy with crosswind (2nd loop) youd think that you'll be covered cause the mountains on both sides but really It's a wind tunnel!! I squeezed that brake hard and i was still going at 35-40mph. I got carbon wheels so ly braking is a bit weak. Don't let this scare you the second loop was much more comfortable!!! The flat section I was going at 22ish mph and you'll see your ave climb. Right after out and back I think the toughest hills are the ones leading to Wilmington !!!! Long and very little rest in between. I was on my last ring and I could never stay in zone 2! For finkster peeps how do u guys climb? So u try to stay in zone two? Or try as much as possible to stay close in zone 2? When i tried to stay in zone 2 I climbed at 6mph lol. The first loop it took me 4hrs and second loop it took me 3.5hrs. It was much more head wind and crosswind in lap two and the roads were a bit wet from the rain earlier while I was out somewhere. Major BC what time did you ride out today? I tried to find you but I just can't make out from your picture on how you look like. U probably saw me just didn't know. I'll be leaving @ 730 again tomorrow. Would love to meet.some of you.

Thanks for the update,  I don't know what I'm going to for my zones.  I have been going by RPE instead of zones but I finally found some hills yesterday and I can say now I'm really guessing my cassette.  I thought I could stay with what I have but I think I might be changing it.  I ran out of gears on the hills that I was finding so I can only imagine what is going to happen to me in LP.  I did a ride last year and you are right about the decent I was on the breaks the whole time and I was doing 35-40 (My hands were hurting by the end because I was gripping so hard).  I don't seem to remember the climb into Wilmington though by the time I was done with my one loop I could barely walk and only avg about 15mph for the loop.  I will be finding all the hills I can in the mean time.

Wow I'm glad you are ok,  heal up quick.  The real question is how is the bike I know I'll be riding the brakes on the way down and know I'll still be up in the 30's.  Hopefully it doesn't mess up your training plans too much.

So glad to hear you made it out alive. That must be extremly scary. I have only falled when I haven't clipped out. Couldn't imagine going down at 30mph!!!

Thanks for the heads up about the tickets. I'm headed up next weekend and can't afford any tickets. Fixing broken spokes is emptying my bank account.

Whoa - Jeremy! Very glad you are OK. That is a bad news anytime, but this close to LP can be a real nightmare. I know tomorrow will really be the worse of the soreness - hope you heal up quickly. You have lots of fitness in the bank, so you should not be worried at all.

On a similar note, we had a 4 hour/1:45 brick scheduled for today, but we are suffering through a tropical deluge all day and into tomorrow. Our coach called us up this morning and strongly suggested that we scratch the bike on the road and sub in a 2:30 ride on the trainer instead. Said it was way to close to LP to take on increased risk of a crash in the rain.

Stay safe everyone!

I know this has probably been asked before, but.....

Does anyone know what flavor of Ironman Perform is used on the bike course?

My long standing nutrition plan (2 prior IM's) is just NOT working anymore.  I'm gonna have to switch it up a bit and thought I would give the Perform a try (good to use what's on course!).

6 more weeks !!

Last year they had two flavors Lemon Lime and Orange Mango.  One flavor was offered on the Bike and one was offered on the Run.  I don't remember which one was offered at which spot though.  I'm guessing it will be the same, they don't have a lot of flavors so my guess it will be the same.  The problem is that for me at least it is hard to get the premade stuff around here.  I can get the mix, but just like Gatorade the consistency is not the same.  For the run portion it was the premade stuff so we just opened the bottles and poured them into the cups.  When I volunteered last year during the thank you dinner they had skids of it left over so I was able to go home with 4 cases of the stuff.  It was good to practice with it for sure.  Now I just need to find some more.

So is the generaly consensus from those of you who have been up there that the roads are pretty crappy? Can anyone who has raced before comment as to if they are worse or just the same? Wondering if the storms last fall made them worse. I would think the warm winter would have been easier on them this year.

Today I competed in the HITS HIM at Hunter Mountain. The course was easily more challenging than one loop of Lake Placid (especially the run), so I'm very encougaged I was able to pace the bike well enough to run strong and still have a decent time (for me). I ended up getting a bit competitive and raced the run (oops), but otherwise I felt my pacing/effort could be held for the full distance. RR will be up sometime this week but my rough splits were 33:00/3:11:00/1:45:00.

I rode the course last year and just got back from there this wknd. I really can't remember it being that bumpy towards the end last year. I seem to remember this wknd "around" mile 5 and 13 there was a significant bumpy/potholy patch. I also think the last 11 miles  were bumpy (especially the last 6). I think we will all be fine with the one lane being close to traffic though. Man that was scary having an 18 wheeler pass by flying down the hills. WHEW! I saw a few people take some hard hits, but not because of the roads. The falls were from mechanical or rider error from shifting.

Right before this wknd I had a tune up and cables replaced at a new bike shop in my hometown. When I went to LP my chain came off about 8 times on the first ride. I took my bike to High Peaks in LP. They found the master link installed backwards, something needed adjusted with the derailleurs and they found my stem was loose causing the front end to shake. No wander why I thought my front end was going to fall apart on the descend! CRap! I did the course the second day and all is perfect now! Make sure you have your bikes looked over!!!

I volunteered on the bike course last year and we only had the orange mango flavor so I assume that the run course had the lemon lime. I tried the orange mango after the last biker passed our station on the second loop and it tasted pretty good, but I was also really thirsty and tired from volunteering(kinda sad, I know) and when I bought some to train with, it did not taste near as good as I remembered... I am not sure how Lemon Lime tastes though.

Omg!!! When we had the seminar people mentioned about somebody blowing a tire! I'm glad your ok! Good thing you end up on the side road and not over the railing cause those things are very low and easy to go over! Some riders are giving others a bad reputation riding in 2-3-4 rows. One driver threw coins at me while I was far right in the flat section and it hit me in the helmet. Some drivers pointed their finger pointed at the other bikers like a gun. I find some trucks don't even slow down but speed up when they're beside me and my front wheel would wobble. I hope your recovering well. Too bad we didn't get to meet!

Depends if your a strong rider or not you may need to change your cassette. I had a 11-28 and it was a little challenging for me. We all had a good laugh when one guy showed up with a 11-23 lol and high peaks cycle sold at least 10new cassettes Hahaha. As for the downhill I need a newbrake x_x
