Tdotnew2tri - 2012-06-08 9:02 PM Hey guys here's ny.little report as my eyes are getting heavier. Weather was 42f this morning when we left at 7:30. No wind until I climbed to Wilmington. I was in the first wave and the people in my wave are wayyyy faster than my pace lol. My first time here so my first impression is It's beautiful out here!!!! If you haven't been here I recommend driving the course before hand esp the descent part cause that's where the pretty stuff is mostly. When u ride it u won't have the time to see the river or lake on your right or even the mini falls coming out of the mountain. Coming out of town there is a climb but to me It's not a false flat! I saw the uphill coming and felt it. The roads kinda shittyw cause of the cracks and loose sands. The descent is a bit crazy with crosswind (2nd loop) youd think that you'll be covered cause the mountains on both sides but really It's a wind tunnel!! I squeezed that brake hard and i was still going at 35-40mph. I got carbon wheels so ly braking is a bit weak. Don't let this scare you the second loop was much more comfortable!!! The flat section I was going at 22ish mph and you'll see your ave climb. Right after out and back I think the toughest hills are the ones leading to Wilmington !!!! Long and very little rest in between. I was on my last ring and I could never stay in zone 2! For finkster peeps how do u guys climb? So u try to stay in zone two? Or try as much as possible to stay close in zone 2? When i tried to stay in zone 2 I climbed at 6mph lol. The first loop it took me 4hrs and second loop it took me 3.5hrs. It was much more head wind and crosswind in lap two and the roads were a bit wet from the rain earlier while I was out somewhere. Major BC what time did you ride out today? I tried to find you but I just can't make out from your picture on how you look like. U probably saw me just didn't know. I'll be leaving @ 730 again tomorrow. Would love to meet.some of you.

Thanks for the update,  I don't know what I'm going to for my zones.  I have been going by RPE instead of zones but I finally found some hills yesterday and I can say now I'm really guessing my cassette.  I thought I could stay with what I have but I think I might be changing it.  I ran out of gears on the hills that I was finding so I can only imagine what is going to happen to me in LP.  I did a ride last year and you are right about the decent I was on the breaks the whole time and I was doing 35-40 (My hands were hurting by the end because I was gripping so hard).  I don't seem to remember the climb into Wilmington though by the time I was done with my one loop I could barely walk and only avg about 15mph for the loop.  I will be finding all the hills I can in the mean time.

Depends if your a strong rider or not you may need to change your cassette. I had a 11-28 and it was a little challenging for me. We all had a good laugh when one guy showed up with a 11-23 lol and high peaks cycle sold at least 10new cassettes Hahaha. As for the downhill I need a newbrake x_x

Monty - 2012-06-10 8:20 PMSo is the generaly consensus from those of you who have been up there that the roads are pretty crappy? Can anyone who has raced before comment as to if they are worse or just the same? Wondering if the storms last fall made them worse. I would think the warm winter would have been easier on them this year.
Firsg time I rode the course. The main road where we race seems to be clean. The shoulders on the other hand has cracks and loose sands. If you go up to train try to stay away from the shoulders as they have cracks. Your going.30-40mies per hour anyway most of my descent I didn't have cars behind me. Not sure where the damage was but the other members the roads were well patched up.

QuestionOn Friday I did two loops the first loop I felt like crapola and my heart rate went up to 162ish area. Didn't feel good at all. Saturday I felt great riding out of town my.highest heart rate during.the climb was 151bpm. Even going up to Wilmington. I avg about 138ish in hr and the first day high 140ish low 150s. Why did I feel way better the next day and why was my heart rate low? Lower? Thanks!

Back from LP early.  Swam Friday night before the storm. Headed out Saturday morning got 13.1 miles into the ride headed down the Keene descent and and had a front wheel blow out at 30 mph. After a huge wreck I visited the LP ER and ended up with 9 stitches in my hand, alot of road rash and a severely brusied hip. No swimming for a week the doctor said. I as able to do 1 hr on the trainer after the crash just to keep my hip moblie. Taking today off and hopefully will be back at something tomorrow.

What was funny is the crash was not my fault a flat is a flat but at 30 mph on the front wheel there was no saving it.

A EN Camp member came by saw the police and ambulance and I heard him say "That will sure make you slow down!"

I was riding the shoulder as I was supposed to be and had on Specialized Armadillo tires and still flated the roads are bad. Its to bad this happened by "God works all things for Good."

If you are riding in LP the police are starting to ticket people if they are riding 2 and 3 abreast or in the middle of the rode. Triathletes are going us a bad name up there because they come in and think they rule the roads.

Good luck training

Omg!!! When we had the seminar people mentioned about somebody blowing a tire! I'm glad your ok! Good thing you end up on the side road and not over the railing cause those things are very low and easy to go over! Some riders are giving others a bad reputation riding in 2-3-4 rows. One driver threw coins at me while I was far right in the flat section and it hit me in the helmet. Some drivers pointed their finger pointed at the other bikers like a gun. I find some trucks don't even slow down but speed up when they're beside me and my front wheel would wobble. I hope your recovering well. Too bad we didn't get to meet!
Holy crap! U said coins! My friend had coins thrown at him by an suv twice and he called to report it. To make a long story short he had several calls back and forth from the NY police.they found the vehicle.the mother was driving and the 2 kids in the back were throwing coins at bike riders.they were 7 and 15! The mother said she knew nothing about it and was ticketed.anyhow she felt horrible and is making her kids write an apology to my friend.I will keep ya posted if he gets a letter.crazy!

Today I competed in the HITS HIM at Hunter Mountain. The course was easily more challenging than one loop of Lake Placid (especially the run), so I'm very encougaged I was able to pace the bike well enough to run strong and still have a decent time (for me). I ended up getting a bit competitive and raced the run (oops), but otherwise I felt my pacing/effort could be held for the full distance. RR will be up sometime this week but my rough splits were 33:00/3:11:00/1:45:00.

Great  job! a 1:45 run on a tough HIM course is a textbook demonstration of perfect bike pacing. That looks great for IMLP!

Need advice,  feeling good today took yesterday off. Should I rest another day or just try to get a little bit of work in today? Bike has to be on the trainer as I can not hold bars and I can run.

I have never been in this situation before and I have not missed a bike or run workout up to this point. I don't want to throw away 24 weeks of training. Especially when I am supposed to be at peak volume.

Jayson - even when all other course factors are the same (wind, temp, etc.) there are several other factors that can jack your HR: travel the day before, adrenaline from just being out on the course for the first time, and lack of familiarity with the course, and lack of solid/normal sleep the night before. I don't know what you did the day before your first loop but (at least for me) having a day completely off the day before can leave you a little flat. If you combine that with the other factors, then it sounds like you had a pretty normal day to me.

I just took a peak at my files from last year for example. The morning after I arrived in LP I rode out easy and did the Keene descent. For the climb out of town my power was 185 watts and HR average was 165. Two days later on race day I rode the same effort and for the same portion of the course my power was 185 and my HR was 153.

First, you have tons of deep base fitness built up - don't worry bout losing any of it over the next week to 10 days. Getting healed up and having full mobility should be your number one goal at the moment. I wouldn't take the day completely off, but instead recommend some type of active recovery - for example, if you were supposed to get 1.5 hours of something in today then instead do a little light dynamic warm up and then go for a good walk. the time of the warm up and the walk could be about equal to the total time of your planned workout.

Keep the road rash covered for the most part and let it stay moist, (not scabby) for the next week. Just air it out on occasion, but not for long - you will maintain a lot more mobility, it will heal better, and have a little less scarring.

I posted this in the general forums as well but I'm looking for any insight so I'll post again here.

Obviously, I'm trying to bike as many hills as I can and, luckily, living near the North Georgia mountains, I've been able to get in some good long hard climbs.  The past two weeks I've had a pain in my left knee that feels like IT band issues.  However, I've not had any problems while running.

I've not heard of IT band issues on the bike.  Anyone else experience this, it it something other than an IT band issue?  Other than rolling and such, wondering what to do.  I've had no other issues through training, I'd hate to start having issues now.

In the past, Ive had similiar issues while riding many hills.  After going to a Sports Med and recieving A.R.T. on my hip, it went away.  I stretch my hips as often as possible and use the roller as well.  The hips being tight from riding hills can cause IT band issues.  I was told to use an easier gearing and stretch the hips...Sitting farth back on the saddle may also be beneficial.  I also went with a 12-28 rear cassette to allow me to spin easier.

Best of luck...  The A.R.T really was helpful as well...

Awesome job, Jeff - but that is crazy about the Clydesdale/age group placing. At least you managed to make someone else's day in the 30-34 age group. And look at it this way: at least you won't be allowed to have your shoes pre-clipped to the bike in LP. So you should be a good bit faster.

Edited to fix stupid iPhone link messiness.

So after doing the bike course on day one I was hoping to do it a little quicker. The last 22 miles on both loops I felt slow as a slug, but I felt like I could whip out 20 miles on the run with out a problem. I had a wierd issue in my ankle and only ran .5 mile afterwards. Anyhow, I was wandering if anyone rode the course before you raced last year if you had a better time during the race? My bike looked like I was a CVS pharmacy over the wknd. I had bagels, pill boxes, a 50 oz water bottle, plus 2 bottles in between the cages, gels, etc... attached to it. I don't plan on using this set up for the race. My race set up should be about 4 pounds lighter and then I will have race wheels on . I also had fatigued legs from the long run the night before. I'm curious to how much free speed I can gain with the wheels and less weight when I race (especially going in tapered and assuming my training continues well). Any thoughts??? I know the wind can play a factor as well, but if it seems to be calm that day my thoughts are curious.

I also just noticed there finally is a LP Ironman fb page, unless there was and I just wasn't aware of it. If you need some more hype check it out
