So any ideas how tough they are for online masters admissions?  I applied at Penn States' online campus, new company pays for school so why not.  Part of me thinks they just want $$ so they aren't picky for online admissions.

I had a great time in undergrad partying, doing school work not so much, so the grades are just above the Mendoza line, but that was almost 20 years ago.

nothing hard to base it on but my feeling are inline with yours as far as admissions standards.  if its a free ride then nothing to lose.

the funny thing about grad school is you learn real quick that you have to study.  and then you realize, damn this isn't so hard..why t F didn't i do this in undergrad.  the biggest oddity to me though was a C is pretty much a failing grade in grad school.  and i guess this may dependent on major, but after the first semester you really realize you're competing against your peers much more-so than undergrad work.  though i'm not sure how this would "feel" in an online program.

penn state has a great geography and gis program.  that said, i'm not sure how i feel about hiring a penn state grad if the opportunity presented itself.  i've had this discussion with several colleagues and it seems we're all in pretty much the same boat.  perhaps a few years down the road these feeling may change.  but all indications point to senior officials in state college letting that monster run rampant.  i have a hard time with that.  academically a great institution, just not sure if that is something you've considered.

congrats on the new job.

YUM!

More of this, please!

So I'm aware of taper madness, but is there such a thing as peak week madness? My (first) HIM is coming up in about 2.5 weeks and yesterday and today I'm just feeling really down- not about my training, I trust the plan - but just down about life in general and having the blues. Maybe I should just look at more pix of Ryan Lochte, that will cheer me up!

Oh, ok, here is one more if you absolutely must see it.

I am normally not down in the dumps during peak weeks, but I am tired, hungry and crankier than normal!

No guys that look like them at my pool either.  If there were, I'd be there a LOT more than I am now.

Happy Birthday, Trevor and good luck with that HIM!

Melissa- Sorry, you're feeling down.  Training hard generally helps my general outlook but yeah, definitely more tired and hungry.

YUM!

Such a Lochte fan here...have been for years!  I love/respect/admire what Phelps has done, it's incredible.  But I do love to see someone who has been a #2 for so long have their time in the spotlight.  And, as hot as he is, he can remain so.

Ryan Lochte is the bomb. Olympic Trials swimming is the bomb. So is track-and-field. And diving. Heck, it all rocks. I LOVE OLYMPICS!!!

So here was my philosophical musing yesterday... Surprised I've never mused about this, seeing as I was a swimmer... but isn't it interesting that after their races, no matter how long and grueling (granted 1500M is the longest race, sub-15 minutes for those Olympians)... swimmers just fling off their goggles, look at their time, smile, high-five, and crawl across lanes for congratulations. You never see them puking, crumbling to the ground in exhaustion, eyes rolling back in their head -- any of those things you can see after a running race or a triathlon and you don't think twice about it. WHY IS THAT??????!!!

Is it that swimmers train so much beyond their races? (I'd guess Phelps puts in at least 15K/day, and his longest race is 400M.) Is it the self-preservation aspect of swimming that you are limited in when you can breathe (due to water), so we can only push our bodies so far? Is it the lack of pounding on the body (like with running)? I think it's cool, of course, but just something intersting to think about.

And when you're not thinking about that... Think about this:

IT'S TREVOR'S BIRTHDAY!!!

Happy Birthday, Trevor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crush that race this weekend! Everyone else too!! Sam! Who else?

They are showing the winners.  It's kind of like when we cross the finish line at a big race.  Like at IM - that last mile you usually find something deep that you didn't know was there 10 miles before.  These guys on camera have usually just won a huge race, and while they swam their herats out they have that "exztra" adrenaline going from the win.  I have seen folks that weren't in that prime spot needing help out of the pool.  Just my .02 though.

Yeah. In the womens 400 freestyle the 14 year old in the near lane did not win or place and in a brief camera shot she looked spent. Besides if you fell down to the bottom after the race it would be hard to breathe.

I went to my first hot yoga class yesterday at noon. There were about 40 people in the class. Some of the women were very limber and strong. We also had two former college basketball players there who now play overseas.

As far as the yoga goes, I think it will help me. The heat was not too bad, but for a heavy sweater like myself it gave new meaning to a soaked towel. I do not envy the person that has to mop that floor. And for what it is worth I suck at this. But on the bright side I have lots of room for improvement. My PT said my IT bands were not as tight and that my leg flexibility was better. (Then she destroyed me by working a knot in my calf. Almost ate the pillow to keep from screaming.)

P.S. I did the relay at the sprint this past weekend and will report on that later.

Back to a computer and trying to catch up.  Race report is up.

On a sadder note, the swimmer that drown at CdA passed yesterday.  He was 44 and from Seattle.  My heart breaks for his family.  I still haven't heard what happened but it sounds like WTC did a fantastic job getting him out of the water.

I loved the midnight CdA video.  She was so close!

The US olympic trial swimmers are amazinng. They are all such hard workers and the ones that make the US team are so happy. I enjoy watching their enthusiasm.

Lol, you guys didn't post the Lolo Jones hurdling pics!? Shocking. Guess who just came back from running 10 miles? Very happy today, I think I am supposed to do 13.1 in a few weeks, so this is a good development. Foot feels good but am going to ice anyways.

Thanks, guys!

Hey, good luck to all of our fabulous racers this holiday weekend!  Stay safe with all of that heat and humidity.  One more long ride for me and then putting it into taper mode.

Kim, glad the foot is feeling good.

I'm packing up and heading to Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario for a 9-day canoeing trip with hubs, his bros, and one sis-in-law.  There will be 8 of us all together.  I have some mixed feelings about the trip.  I'm really looking forward to getting away, but we've done this trip before, and I get super stir crazy (read "irritable") after a few days.  I'm taking the wetsuit and hoping the water isn't too cold to swim.  I will be off the grid from Sunday morning until the following Saturday afternoon.

GOOD LUCK RACING PEEPS.  I LOOK FORWARD TO READING YOUR RACE REPORTS!

Don't be surprised if you get a knock at your door!  lol.  I would love to play in the rain.  We had temps of 103 degrees yesterday, and we're having a terrible drought.  They've cancelled the fireworks because of it.

I was at an auction yesterday, and this guy collapsed.  He went down and people were doing CPR on him.  Other people, I'm not certified and I was busy drinking gator aid in the shade.  It looked bad, he was a really big guy, older, and already had a pacemaker, don't know if he made it.

It did make me think I should renew my CPR certification.  Keep hugging the people you love.

Heading down to the Gold Coast tomorrow, marathon on Sunday. Weather looking good despite the longest spell of cold weather we've had since 1978.

I'm a bit worried about not having done a long run in 3 weeks but I've followed the plan to the letter so we'll see...
