Subject: Non-wetsuit-legal IMWI?
I'm starting to hear rumors/worries about the water at IMWI being too warm for wetsuits this year. Apparently the lake is above the limit right now, so it would have to cool off in the next month. What are people's thoughts?

I'd be interested in practicing on Monona without a wetsuit, but not by myself. I'll get hit by a boat or a ski-jumper or something.

My thoughts are that despite a blistering hot summer September can have some very cool nights and days.  I would be willing to bet it gets back down low enough to allow wet-suits.

Yeah, no wetsuits would suck. That's my thought.

I've decided not to waste my energy worrying about it. It will be what it will be, and there is absolutely nothing any of us can do to control it.

I've been doing my long OWSs without a wetsuit anyway... I highly recommend it!

Perhaps you were talking about your comfort swimming in a wetsuit in warm water. If you were talking rules, however, I thought it made no difference unless you have Kona or age group aspirations.

I've been training in my wetsuit in warm water, have no Kona/AG aspirations, and am REALLY hoping to wear a wetsuit unless the temps are ungodly warm.

"Wetsuits may be worn in water temperatures up to and including 24.5 degrees Celsius/76.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures exceeding 24.5 degrees C /76.1 degrees F will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots. Wetsuits will be prohibited in water temperatures greater than 28.8 degrees C/84 degrees F."

I have used my wetsuit twice this year total. It has simply been too warm, and with the thought of swimming in water that is 75 degrees plus for over an hour I am planning on going without a wetsuit. I just don't want to overheat that much in the first hour of a looong day. I won't be wearing a wetsuit at the OWS next week and am training as though I won't on race day.

I believe he is looking the 2010 current rule as stated below:

What are the current wetsuit requirements?

  • Until Sept. 1, 2010 there are no restrictions on the type of wetsuit worn, provided the water temperature is less than 78 degrees Fahrenheit.  Athletes may choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures between 78 degrees Fahrenheit and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with the understanding that they will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots.  Wetsuits are prohibited in water temperature greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, I would expect them to follow the 2011 rule because the race is after 9/1/10.

I wasted a ton of energy worrying about how cold Lake Michigan was going to be for Racine 70.3 and it turned out to be a non issue.  Like Lisa, I'm not even thinking about it.  The temps are cooling down next week and as this link shows the water changes pretty regularily without a significant drop in air temps.  For me, I'd be willing to give up "awards" to wear my Xterraa cause I have zero chance ot qualifying for anything!

I didn't realize you could choose to wear a wetsuit if you wanted.

Personally I can swim forever without any training in a wetsuit, but without one I sink and die. I have only put in 2 weeks of swim training so far for this race, so I was kinda hoping for that suit

I swam the course this morning and the water temp was 79.  The last week and a half have been very warm and humid and the nights have been in the 70's and I bet the water warmed up considerably.  This week's forecast is cooler, less humid and night temps in the 50's and 60's.  I am betting that it will cool down some before 9/12.
