Waited a little while to do this:

28, med student, OSU grad, new daddy (2.5 months...), was a firefighter for 9 years (5 in Stillwater and 4 in Fairbanks AK). I've been way too sporadic with training, between life events, time management, and not placing enough emphasis on my health.

But things are getting out of hand between all the time spent at a desk and the associated munching, and 200 lbs. is my personal cut-off, kind of a point at which I feel it is really time to make some changes. Studying biochem and seeing what an unhealthy body looks like from the inside has been a big eye-opener as well!! I've cut out coke/pop/soda entirely a few months ago, which was hard, and started drinking my coffee black instead of coffee with my sugar. The more shallow impetus for all of this is that I'm pretty poor and can't afford a "fat wardrobe" in addition to the one I wore just this summer.

So I've dabbled in training for the lifestyle at different times, but have begun to make at least running a full-fledged habit; I plan to build up the S and B over the next month or 2 and then begin a 16 week plan around Feb. in hopes of doing at least one tri over the summer, maybe 2.

Look forward to meeting some folks and getting held accountable if I start to slack...

Congratulations on the life turnaround and throwing your hat into the tri ring!  And, of course, being a new dad.  But that most likely means you'll be up early anyway, so there will be plenty of trainer time.

I hope your winter training goes according to plan; with consistency and a gradual buildup, you'll bring yourself right to a tri's doorstep next year uninjured.  In the meantime, enjoy the forums, the good advice available to you, ask questions, and train hard!!

Hey

Congratulations on picking up this challenging sport. I too am a virgin triathlete (started swimming and biking this fall) but am inspired by these forums. Incidentally I am a student here at OSU in stillwater, your old stomping ground. There in OKC there is a great tri club from what I hear. There website is http://www.triokc.org/if you are looking to get involved with a group.

Good Luck

Hello There.
Just wanted to say hello. I am currently working up a base to do Du's since I don't know how to swim yet. I am east of OKC by about 20 min outside Mcloud OK. It was kind of funny seeing AK and OK in your introduction. We just got stationed here in OK in mid-Oct from Anchorage AK. Had been in AK for 6 years and hubby had been there 8 with a lot of overseas time. Congrats on being a new dad and finding BT. You are going to love it.

Again Welcome.

I'm in MWC actually, but I'm from here and was just stationed up there. So kinda the opposite I guess.

Wow, for not even hit 30 yet, you've accomplished a lot in life -- congrats!

I'm originally from Tulsa, OK, but now live in the Northeast.  I do often get tempted to go back to the warm, flat praries to train and race.  It's wonderful that OKC has the RedMan now and that triathlon in growing across the state.  Very good trend and an excellent way for people to get in shape.

I'll echo what someone else said about finding success:  just make a plan and stick to it.

Should we start calling you Dr. Freeze?

I started medschool at 29, was an EMT & worked at Outward Bound for several years. Started tris as a resident after having back surgery during my ortho rotation.

You will survive the next 7-10 years and continue to be amazed by the human body at the other end of it!

Welcome to our world...

Welcome to BT.

Med student, new dad and tris? That's a lot on your plate.

And you gave up soda? Power to you. I'm trying to give up diet soda (already switched to all decaf), but I haven't managed to succeed at that yet.

Welcome ~ we need more triathletes in Oklahoma....... glad to have you. The triathlete community in Oklahoma is not huge but we have some great athletes in this state and some really great people.

TRIOKC is great and so is TAT (Tulsa Area Triathletes). Both groups put on some great events......there is the Spring Fever Triathlon in Claremore in April that would be a great event to start with - lots of newbies - lots of encourangement.....check the websites for updates on events - if you have any questions about local events let me know. There is an indoor tri in Tulsa in January if you are interested.
