Subject: First OWS...Complete!

I posted this in the Triathlon Talk forum too but in case anyone only checks this one I wanted to thank you all too!

Completed my first OWS this morning! Though not without incident. Full on panic attack within the first 150yds. As soon as I got out in the water and held onto the dock I told the volunteers that I was terrified (hey, they told me to let them know). In the safety meeting beforehand the RD talked specifically about anxiety and that it was the biggest obstacle during the race (insert anecdote about casualty of IM Louisville last year). I was doing everything I could think of to calm down ahead of time but once I reached the dock and the start line I could just tell I was too afraid to start alone. It was a wave start with the 2.4 mile swimmers going then the 1.2 and half mile swimmers starting 3 minutes later. I stayed far far back. They had a kayak come down just to ride along side me to make me feel better. GOD BLESS THAT MAN. He was so encouraging and really did stay with me through just about the whole race. He talked me down from my hyperventilating and did a good job of taking my mind off of things. I think there were just a lot of elements to get used to that you can't get used to until they happen. Sighting was fine but the waves from the barges and good Lord the current were not things I could really or had really experienced before. I'm happy to report though that I did complete the swim and even did the last 150 or so without the kayak (he wasn't allowed in that area). Everyone was so incredibly supportive of me and I just love how this sport and many others are just such positive experiences. I was panicked and even once I calmed down, still pretty slow but the RD kept radio-ing my kayaker to make sure I was doing alright and complete strangers on the docks were telling me how "Missy Franklin" I looked. It was so much fun and I'm so happy I did it. Still nervous about my tri swim in 2 weeks because of the panic I felt initially but I know that I can rely on my stroke now and my tri swim won't be in a river so no barges and no currents *hopefully*.

Thank you to everyone on BT because I don't think I could have done it without all of your advice through all of the forums and articles available here. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Did you do a 1.2 MILE open water swim???  If you did.... congrats, because I still haven't managed that and I have already done 8 Super Sprint, and Sprint tri's!

Half a mile is 880yards, that distance is exhausting even in a pool!

You did really well!

The first one is always the toughest. You got through it! Now you can go into your next one with some confidence knowing that you have already done it before.

Great job!

Great job!  The first OWS is always tough.  Especially in a race situation.

The next one will be easier, and the next one, and the one after that.

Great job.  And, great write-up.  You really put into words what so many people feel.  I've seen this skill in your other posts too.   It will help a lot of people.  They can learn and anticipate the feeling and learn from your write-up.  Very cool, Rnay.   Thank you.

Great job!!  I just read your blog entry--it was amazing .  It takes a lot of heart to keep going when you are feeling so scared.  Way easier to just have the kayak take you back to shore.  As others have said, it gets easier!  Congrats and good luck in your race.

Thanks so much everyone! I spent about an hour in the pool Tuesday just hanging out in the deep water to really get used to having nothing around me but water and it did a lot to make me feel better. I don't have a lot of swimming experience to begin with so it's really not surprising that I panicked. Historically, black people just don't swim. My mom is in her 60s and when she was young there were pools that she couldn't go to and she definitely didn't grow up with money to afford going to a pool either so she never learned to swim. I didn't really learn until I was 19 and took a beginning swimming class in college. I didn't start swimming for fitness until May of this year. To think that I've now swam in the mighty Ohio river is just insane! Thank you all for your support!

I did my first triathlon (sprint) this past weekend.  Going in, I was most worried about the run but figured I could walk when I needed to.  I've swam most of my life, although I didn't do any OWS while training.

Like the OP, I panicked early in the swim.  I had been kicked, my goggle strap broke and the sun was glaring at my face.  My first thought was "what the hell did I get myself into"?  But I tread water for 30 secs, gathered myself and just kept swimming.  Although the semi-leaking goggles annoyed the hell out of me, I finished the swim without further incident.

It was a man-made lake and visibility was 1ft because of the sand that got kicked up.  During my training, I easily swam upwards of 700-800 yards in preparation for the 550 yard swim.  I literally felt like I was swimming in quicksand!  I was more tired after this swim than any of my 700 yard training swims in a pool.  Best advice I can give is to do an OWS before your race.  The confidence you gain from it alone is worth it, even if you just go once or twice.
