![]() Swim
Comments: Started fast then calmed down after about a couple minutes. Wanted to up my stroke rate but my HR and RPE shot up to I decided to just calm down and take advantage of draft opportunities that presented themselves early in the race. I lost my helpers a few times but quickly found more feet to draft while staying inline with buoys and this enabled me to get what I think is my best swim split ever in a triathlon with a swim this long or more! :) What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I accidentally put my watch with my swim stuff into my swim bag which may have cost me about 10-15 seconds of a mini panic thinking, did I drop it on my way in??? Then I looked in the bag and found it, whew! Mounted it on mickey mouse watch mount (didn't wanna use 1030 Plus because I thought it may have been stolen and I didn't wanna worry about that). I could have saved maybe 20 seconds by just putting my watch back on my wrist instead while running into transition? Removed wetsuit as quickly as possible without falling down. Ankles part were a bit hard to remove as predicted. Quickly stuffed wetsuit into bag. Washed mouth, consumed another Maurten Gel/Caf 100, quickly dried hair, headband on, glasses on, helmet on and clipped, shoes on and jogged bike out of transition. Asphalt was a bit rough but not Goleta Beach rough, but still rough to slow me down a bit coming in from the swim, ugh... My spot in T1 was about 0.15 miles away from swim finish chute. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Bike
Comments: Of all the triathlons I've ever done before, this is the first one where I fully committed to keeping my effort nowhere close to Z4 for any sustained period of time to see if my run legs can perform better and it worked! Drank Infinit every 20 minutes, then 15, then 10, then ~10 again. Almost finished the entire bottle. HR zones: Z2=51%, Z3=45%, Z4=3% What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Jogged quickly back to my transition spot. Racked bike, helmet off, bike shoes off, sprayed lotsa TriSlide on both feet, socks on, shoes on, hat on. Grabbed running nutrition bag and ran out of T2. This bag idea saved me maybe 30 seconds vs putting stuff in my pockets still in my transition spot, yay! What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Run
Comments: Heavy legs as anticipated exiting T2 so I just went easy around 9:45/mi pace while I pocketed my ChapStick, Maurten Gels, and sunscreen mini tube (just in case the sun came out and got hot). After almost a mile in my legs started feeling good and upped my pace a bit and kept my HR in mid to high Z3 range as planned. Once I got to the hill I managed to jog up it without making my HR go too high and making my quads and hamstrings lock up. At what felt like the steepest part of the hill I slowed to a speedwalk then resumed running again once that was done. Descended well by doing a slight lean forward and higher cadence. After that hill I upped my pace a bit more and got into Z4 and kept this up for 3 miles until the hill again where I did the same walk strategy. After the descent, my legs started feeling the burn and near locking up feeling so I kept my pace where it was while taking water at every aid station (I may have lost a bit of time by walking a few seconds to drink but I didn't wanna spill any since for the first time ever, I didn't bring my own hydration belt). What would you do differently?: Practice running and drinking water out of cups to see if I spill any water. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walked around and congratulated with a few finishers in the area. Looked for Elisa but she was not where I saw her while I ran towards the finish chute so I walked slowly to transition and forgot to do any stretching. >.< I also didn't notice any triathletes eating any post race food/snacks/drinks so I didn't bother looking for that area. What limited your ability to perform faster: Uncertainty about running and drinking water out of cups. Event comments: Very good race, I thought the bike course would be crowded but I had no issues with that, even at the hill where I saw a few athletes walking their bikes up. The only undesirable thing for me would be running on the sand for about 1000ft to get to the finish chute. Last updated: 2025-11-03 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:45am for a 5:45am arrival at parking place time. Brushed teeth and put contacts on. Lubed up and applied sunscreen. Put on HR strap and race day kit then generous NewSkin on problem areas on feet. Put on running shoes and socks and morning clothes to keep warm. Made toastie and ate it chased with Trader Joes apple sauce and water at 5:20am. Left Best Western Plus at around 5:30am.
Arrived at parking place at 5:45-5:50am and found a nice parking spot then walked to transition area. Got set up then went to portapotties at 6:10am to try pooping even though I didn't really feel like having to go. Sat calmly inside (was not used yet, whew) and finally after about 5 or so minutes I had a small to medium sized poop, hehe. This may be due to pooping after dinner last night. Washed hands with sanitizer after wiping.
Returned to transition and found my friend Les and his daughter, Violet. Chatted a bit while eating a Maurten Solid 160 bar before returning to my spot. Made final checks on my bike and calibrated my power meter. Kept sipping water lil by lil throughout my time in transition.
Did normal warmup routine then suited up after fully lubing my shoulders, armpits, and neck. Put 2 swim caps on and goggles on top then walked to swim warmup area at 7:00am after consuming a Maurten Gel/Caf 100. Licked goggles then got in water for some acclimation around 7:05am. Swam a bit, let lotsa water into wetsuit, then swam around some more to get my heart rate up. Shortly before 7:20am I got out and seeded myself with the 1:45/100yd group (between the 1:30 sign and 2:00 sign). I wanted to draft of them. ;)
