Riding fixie is unlike riding a bike in many ways. You are more connected to the road, you have better control of your bike, the thing is light is all get up, it's more fun than a geared bike...I could go on for days.
I'm planning on doing IMWI on a fixie within the next 5 years. My current gear ratio is 48/14, so it's certainly not happening on that, but it's certainly doable and yes, different. I mean, why the hell would anyone do an IM? It's just another way to challenge yourself.
I have a friend who did IM Canada on a fixie. I think he used a 46x18. He's done Florida on a fixie as well, but that's an ideal course for one.
I've done some pretty hilly centuries on mine, but i don't see myself ever doing an IM on one.
