You guys forget how replaceable bumper skins are. I've been kissed by another car so lightly I barely felt it in a parking lot, but both cars needed bumpers. Rather than fix the cracks, it's easier and better to just get a new bumper skin. ~500 bucks + paint.

So if the guy got rear ended lightly, and bumped into the car in front that would explain both bumpers needing replacement.

Could have also been hail or vandalism. My subaru had 8,000 in hail damage, and when I got it back you couldn't tell at all. I'd have no problem buying that sort of damage history.

That said, I'd make damn sure a private mech inspected both bumper shocks and the frame to make sure it wasn't actually a big impact. But on a lexus that would probably end up under insurance or a writeoff, especially since the big hits usually set off a billion expensive airbags.

I am always amazed at these situations. You wanted to purchase a vehicle, and trusted that the CPO (which requires you to have faith that the dealer's inspection was actually more than a routine check) means something, the dealer never mentioned anything else about the car. You used great sense finding another resource that indicated undisclosed information. The dealer, who actually did all the work on the car but did not tell you up front, then confirms the damage, but insists it was just 'minor'. They probably also said; "And if there is any problem, just bring it back and we'll fix it, you have our word". Skip the car, and skip this dealer.

Actually it was a different dealer in another state who did the work on the car... My husband, who is a very skeptical guy, was satisfied with the explanation the service guy that did the work gave him (which I mis-stated a bit above, first incident the prior owners had a parking lot ding removed, and scuffed up bumpers re-finished). From what I've read, Lexus is pretty good about standing behind their warranty for CPO vehicles. I guess it doesn't matter at this point because the car is now sitting in our garage...
