I don't agree with anything over there but I fight for their rights to say whatever they want to say unless it directly harms another individual.  Hurting one's feelings or making a person feel uncomfortable is not direct harm.  Showing a stock photo picture or picture out of a newspaper and laughing may disgust us because we cycle.  When comedians make fun of Christians and Muslims, one group may be offended.  A slippery slope toward censorship of everything that makes a person frown is the solution to nothing.  I have more of a mousetrap approach.  People should be able to express themselves as they want but the minute they cross the line, the punishment is severe and they know it.  ;-) 

Jorge makes a valid point that since it is privately owned, they (FB) can determine what is allowed and what is not.  As for starting a similar thread here, I don't see that point since I do not support their cause.  I may start one sometime about people who text while driving or drunk drivers. 

I guess I don't understand what you are trying to say Pector55.  My point was if this was a FB page advocating violence against the groups I listed, would that be okay?  I say it is not.  This page is not making fun of cyclist but encouraging people to cause physical harm, maybe even death, to another human being.  That is not humor.

I am personal friends with a gal by the name of Karen Speed. You won't find Karen's profile on Facebook because it hase been revoked. Again. Karen is a passionate lactavist (breastfeeder, lol) and has been repeatedly removed from facebook because of "inappropriate" photographs such as a side view of her or others breastfeeding. I've seen these pictures and let me assure you, you see more cleavage on college girls profile pics! Anyways, I digress. Facebook is definately a privately owned entity and can choose to remove any items the site operators deem offensive.

I am all for free speech too.

It would be one thing to mock cyclists for their attire, for instance.  It is acceptable to get upset that cyclists have the gall to ride on the road.

It is another thing to encourage bringing physical harm for personal amusement, much in the same way that one can get arrested for yelling fire in a crowded theater.  If you read the terms of Facebook, it is against their policy to encourage violence or illegal acts.  Facebook has the right to enforce those rules, regardless of freedom of speech as they are a private entity.

As someone pointed out, perhaps on ST, if someone who posted on that page followed through with violence, and the savvy lawyer for the injured/killed cyclist found a link to that Facebook page with a post from the accused, the cyclist's family would be quite wealthy courtesy of Facebook.

I can't read things like this because they make me sick to my stomach.  I was reading comments on the pictures for this group and it made me angry.  How people can be so angry/mean/callus to others is mind boggling...

I reported it as well, and feel so lucky that I live in an area where cyclists are respected for the most part.  That page is scary.  I'll never forget seeing the aftermath of a cyclist/car accident last year while I was on a run.  I didn't see it happen, but I did see the mangled bike on the ground and the cyclist being put into the ambulance.  He looked alert and not seriously hurt, thank god!  It was chilling, and a reminder of how powerless we are against thousands of pounds of moving metal.

One thing that does anger me is the mass of inconsiderate "cyclists" here in San Francisco.  They dart in and out of traffic, run reds and stop signs, and race about without helmets or consideration/respect for other cyclists, pedestrians, and cars.  They give those of us who safely follow the rules of the road such a bad name in some circles (circles of ignorant Facebook users apparently). 

Hopefully the page will be taken down because regardless of free speech, it promotes violence.  Anything that encourages and specifically tells people to hurt others should not be considered free speech.  It's really a crime.

Our First Amendment right to "Free Speech" protects us from the GOVERNMENT.  Facebook is not a government entity.  Facebook is a BUSINESS.  It has the right to enforce whatever standards it may choose.

FB has so many "bandwagon" pages, I'm not sure a lot of thought goes into most of the comments. It's very much group hysteria. Where I live, bikes are required by law to ride on the road, but only very lately has the city been putting in bike lanes when re-paving the roads. Our bike path that follows the river is full of strollers and "stand in the middle of the path chatting" types. They hate us too! What is a poor cyclist to do?
