I can relate to the shark fear sorta.  I grew up swimming and surfing Jax beach and have seen a fair share of them around.  The odds of being bitten however just do not figure.  This doesn’t relax me at all when I’m the only person out swimming but in a pack of other swimmers it would.  Stay in the middle and try not to look like the weak sick animal that needs a mercy killing.  If you want to cover all bets, buy a lottery ticket before the race then try to figure the odds of being bitten by a shark in the middle of a tri AND winning the lottery at the same time.  I’ve seen pictures the Navy helo pilots took of the ocean and beach, you would be amazed at the number of sharks that are always nearby, they just don’t look at us as prey.  They do come in a lot closer to shore than you would think.  Knee deep water shark bites are not unheard of.

 

What you should be wary of is water moccasins.  Those snakes are downright ornery.  You couldn't PAY me to swim in a Florida Lake!

 

The worst scenario, learning to water ski in Black Creek, at one time considered having the highest alligator population in northern Florida.

Word brotha. While waiting for my flight school class to pick up I skiied in the Blackwater River by Pensacola.  Had I known what I would have seen once I started flying there, I never would have gone near that water!

Hah!  That's what I should be thinking about too - maybe I'm over my fear of sharks now...

From 1882-2006, there were 13 deaths from shark attacks in Florida, and 544 attacks. There were 7/92 in California.


It's a little known fact that that many of sharks in California waters are vegetarian, hence the lower number of attacks.  So, don't swim with a cucumber in your pocket, okay?

Selachophobia - 2007-06-14 6:36 AM man, learning a ton from you guys.... i know its an irrational fear, but sitting here in the middle of the midwest i only here about oceans when a shark attacks all great advice, and newLeaf i was with you until: "So even if the shark did take a bite of you, it would probably just move on, since you don't have the fat content it needs." and i guess my thought on how far you can see in the water, is more just for comfort and settling myself down to relax and knock out the swim. i honeymooned in Maui and we went snorkeling and snuba diving, after a couple minutes i was ok because you could see like a 100 yards it seemed. plus there were a ton of people with us as well doing the same..... i think just the visibility helped me. your right, it wouldnt make a difference i am not going to outswim a shark. is the visibility pretty good in cali or florida?? thanks,

Some guy caught a Bull Shark in the Mississippi River by St. Louis some time ago.
