Bravo. I thought I felt someone spying on me. Now I know I'm not paranoid. I was getting down on myself today about my endurance when my coach pulled out an old tape of one of my first lesons. It didn't even look like me. What a difference a few months can make, if only we give it a try.

This pretty much nails me too.... I have been swimming for about a month and I am nowhere near where want to be but I am lightyears ahead of where I was that first day. I got discouraged a couple times but over all I wanted to be ready for my first triathlon more .... so I stuck to it and now it is getting easier....

Trying to figure out a way to get an endless pool now ....

Just a thought. You might submit this as an article for Ron to post. I think it may be worth it. Good job, and thankyou.

Wonderful....just excellent!

Believe me, I would have been "that guy" (in female form) except for two things:

1) I started swimming on New Years Day, 2004. I had called ahead to the contact person for my local Master's group listed on the USMS website, and he told me he would be there. Turned out, he was the ONLY person besides me there that day, so he sat down with me and we had a very nice chat about what I could expect. That way when the group started growing day by day and week by week as people filtered back in after the holidays, I new what was coming and got acclimated slowly. Plus, this being the Midwest, the group is filled with very nice, very friendly people who took time to talk to me, and made me feel welcome. Very nice way to get started, and something most people aren't lucky enough to have.

Wow Tania, what did he tell you? No one has ever explained anything to me at that club, except that I was in the wrong lane and should get out of the way.

Thank you (to everyone who's been so complimentary about this post). Ron suggested making it an article, I'm trying to flesh it out a bit.

BTW, I grew up in Burlington and at a duathlon last weekend I set up in transition next to a guy from Billerica. He came in 2nd overall. Not bad from someone from Pinehurst. :)

Thats better than most of the pro-editorials I've read.......seriously. You are'nt a triathlete with a "day-hobby" (i.e. job) in writing are you?

That was really inspiring!  Last week there was a big burly dude, swimming for the first time ever, next to my lane.  He told me I made swimming look smooth and effortless.  I thought, WHAT!!??  I've been swimming less than a year, I still struggle with endurance but I am slow and smooth, I guess.  I nervously gave him a few pointers that I have picked up- it felt weird because I feel I need to improve my technique so much- but it made me feel good that every day, there are people trying new things and I wish someone had encouraged me that first day I got into the pool and hyperventilated for 20 minutes.  I hope he sticks with it.

When I started, I could not do an entire lap in a twenty yard pool.  I've completed one sprint and am signed up for my first Oly in 3 weeks.  From the couch to this in just a shade under 5 months.  There have been a ton of people who encouraged me at my club, but mostly it was just getting in the pool 5 days a week, ignoring the smart a** kids and swimming.  One day it does get easier.  I still don't love it, but I can do 1500 yards without stopping and then get on with my day.
