Hello,

I just found out I am 6weeks pregant..or so. Due 1st week of November.

I am excited, but still bummed about missing the tri season. Timing wasn't good for tri's, but it was good to get an extra tax credit! No really that wasn't the goal. I have 2 kids now...7 and 5. I will be 35 when the baby is born which I feel is a little old. Most of my friends are long gone. I'm from NW Iowa and people here tend to have kids early.

Would love to find a group of women who are in same boat as me. My goal is to continue all three sports, however I have one challenge my heart rate gets pretty high. So I've been doing a lot of research on that and impact on pregnancy. Lots of research out there.

If your prego please chime in! If you advice for us pregnant folks...please also chime in.

Look forward to hearing from everyone -

There is actually a nice article in this months runners world on an elite marathoner who ran thru her pregnancy.  Talk to your OB/GYN and there probably some good info on ACOG web site.  THing about exercise and pregnancy is we don't have all the data because no one can do the study as they aren't willing to risk the unknown.  We can gather data from those women who exercise regardless of what their dr says.  We know women who exercise thru pregnancy have babies with less body fat, and bond with the babies better.  The women get thru the pregnancy and delivery more easily and recover faster.  Also gain less weight.  James Clapp did a lot on this if you goggle him or something.  THere are some absolute contraindications.

Not yet, but I'm hoping to start trying to get pregnant in May.  I have one tri scheduled for the end of April - a last hoorah, I guess.  But I'm hoping to keep working out throughout the pregnancy.  I've been doing some reserach too and it looks like everything's fine just need to do it less intensely while pregnant.  And maybe stay off the bike after the first trimester.  Maybe I'll just become a really good swimmer during the pregnancy!

Congratulations!

I am 5 months pregnant and have been "jogging" term used loosly during the pregnancy. Before I found out i was pregnant, i signed up for a race mid-April. I am toying with the idea of doing the sprint SLOWLY without a competitive bone in my body. I was thinking that if at any time I could (and others) cut myself some slack it would be when I am 5 months pregnant!

I just had my baby 3 weeks ago (perfect timing for tri season

Anyways, I had to quit running fairly early - mostly because I had to pee so bad. This is my second child, so maybe my bladder just wasn't in as great of shape as it was with my first kid. So, I started walking 3-4 miles a day a couple of times a week and kept upw ith the swimming and the biking (inside of course - couldn't risk falling or getting hurt otuside). Eventually biking tired me out and I did only swimming. And I did that up until the day before i gave birth. Swimming was definitely the best thing for me. Also, I had to quit walking at 26 weeks because I was having bad pelvic pain.. once i stopped walking (for exercise) it went away. I didn't want to risk pre term labor or having to be on bedrest.

Oh and congratulations!!!!

Hello, Congratulations! You are still pretty early in your pregnancy most miscarriages happen in first trimester.  Considering you already have two you should be OK with that. I carried twins with a history of miscarriage (The first one was after a swim workout) so I had to play very safe, I could not break a sweat; which left me to yoga and walking and strength work.  After my first trimester my doctor told me not to raise my HR pass 125, that was very hard.  I actually ended up floating in the ocean almost everyday towards the end!

I say it is best to discuss with your obgyn, make sure she/he knows your a triatlete.  Also make sure you have proper hydration.  I remember I had bad leg cramps, I took extra calcium/magnesium that seemed to help.

This seemed like a good article, just remember your suppling everything that baby needs!

I'm not pregnant but I had my last one at age 36 with a 5 and 4 yr old at home... YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD.  You'll actually feel like a better parent with this one and also will enjoy the time as you know this is your last child - atleast in my case it was.

Congrats!

I met a women in the locker room Wed. who had her first baby 6 weeks ago and is signed up to do IMKY in August. She is an amazing athlete and Kona qualified in her first IM back a couple years ago.

She is overwhelmed with being a Mom and isn't sure she can train for it meaning having the time. She swam through her pregnancy, ran until 6 months, and I don't know about the bike.

When I heard she was doing IMKY and saw she was pregnant I wondered as a Mom of 5 if she knew how different being a parent is.  I hope she makes the right decision for her and her family.

Good luck to all of you expecting and those hoping to be expecting too!

Hi everyone,

I'm 28 weeks pregnant with my third (3 year old and 1 year old at home) and due to have a c-section June 24th. I have actually never done a tri but was registered for my first sprint tri this summer. When I found out I was due three weeks before the race, I was really upset about having to back out and wait another year to start training. I've been exercising 5 days a week through my pregnancy but only doing elliptical workouts and recumbant biking. Now that the weather is warmer and I see everyone resuming outdoor training, I'm really bummed about not being able to do much. Any suggestions??????

Good luck to everyone who is pregnant, recently delivered, or trying to conceive. Being a mom is the most wonderful part of life that I have ever experienced but balancing parenting, work, training, ect is really a challenge

Lauren

I wasn't doing tris until after our 3rd child was born. But, I have been a long time runner and ran the whole 9 months through each pregnancy. I ran 5 miles on the morning out 3rd child was born and ran a 10K 5 days before the 2nd. I think the key is you need to be in good shape and used to doing it before you even get pregnant. You need to adjust along the way and do what feel comfortable. I also was lucky to have no problems with any of my pregnancies. I didn't follow my heart rate, but went by perseved effort level. I do think it really helped me feel better during the pregnancies in general and definitely helped me bounce back more quickly. Congratulations to you!

I am about 23 weeks along with my first. Because of all of the infertility treatments to get to this point (finally IVF)  I have been doing NO tri specific training in a long time.

For now, walking and light lifting and swimming, and I couldn;t care less. This baby is what I have wanted for a very long time, and actually, I started doing triathlons to give me some place else to focus, as a way to stop hating my (at the time!) infertile body...

Tri it Cajun Style (Laurie) and DerekL could  have their baby at any moment!

I got pregnant about 5 months after my last tri. My daughter is 20 months and I'm just now back in the game but that has to do w/injury, moving, and taking the bar exam. You know, just some stuff going on!

During pregnancy I continued to swim and light jogging. I could have done the trainer for the bike but didn't. My dr. didn't want me cycling outside, she worried about falls (i've never crashed but she didn't want to risk a fall). No skiing either, she was worried not about me but other people mowing me down potentially. I ended up having a preemie (34 weeks) and I always wonder about that jog a day before I went into labor. But seriously, I don't think that was it. No one really knows why it happened.

Post pregnancy I was seriously up and down emotionally and so exhausted that I didn't return to training until recently. My daughter sleeps great now and life is a little more normal!

Theresa,
Congrats on the pregnancy!  As Possum mentioned, I'm 36 1/2 weeks ( I wish she was ready to "go any moment" as she says!)
I was a little more wary about doing any "training" during my pregnancy, even though I was in the best shape of my life and completed a sprint the day before we found out I was pregnant (about 4 wks along).

I am more along Possum's camp that no amount of strenuous exercise was worth me jeopardizing the kiddo.  Having said that, I also work as a physical therapist in a hospital, which is pretty physically demanding, on my feet, lots of lifting and bending, so by the time I get off work I have had a good 6-8 hours of activity under my belt and I am pretty much whupped.  I am finally calling it quits this week because my feet and ankles and joints can't take much more.   Kudos to you guys who did it, and with kids!!!

Feel free to keep in touch!  I'd love to hear how everything's going!

Oh, and I was pretty upset too at first about missing the rest of tri season!

Hello all,

I've been off the site pretty much for last 3 weeks. I started this thread because I was pregnant, however I had a miscarriage and a D&C a week ago. It's sad, but I'm doing fine with it. I have two healthy kids. Now I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to get in shape for a Tri in 3 weeks! I had to take 10 days off before the miscarriage because I was could tell something was up. Then I had a D&C and Dr. said 1 week off. So I took 5 full days off and just did a spinerval workout today. I felt great.

We will probably try one more time! I actually thought about trying in August so I could do all my tris- but we are not getting any younger so thought we'd try when it's medically okay.

I would love to have everyone try and keep the  discussion up. Sounds like there are a few trying so we can keep each other company.

Ctnord, so sorry. My friend went through it recently and it really hit her. I'm sure keeping up training will help a lot. Regarding your age, I'm 35 and haven't started on #2 yet. I'm probably not going to for a year and a half, I'm just not up for it. I'm 35, had a preemie so I know it may not be the smartest decision but it's the best one for us right now. I guess my point is to try not to stress about your age too much
