Subject: Upgrading Tires
Currently riding on base model Mavic Krysium Elites and want to upgrade to new tires to improve performance. Any recommendations? I have been trying to determine if upgrading to Mavic Carbone SL Premiums or ZIPP' 404's would make enough of a difference for the $$. I'm still improving my 'engine' so I don't want to waste $$ if it's not worth it.

I've done 3 tri's and improved speed/performance on each one. I have two more races this season and want to get averages over 21/22 MPH. Did 19 MPH avg on tri w/ climbs and 21 MPH Avg on totally flat course. Next year planning on moving up to Oly distance and working toward HIM or 70.3 race.

Looking for an good advice. Budget would be pretty wide open. $600 - $2000 depending on how much improvement I could expect.

I think you are meaning upgrading wheels...

I have Zipp 404s that have a power tap hub in them and I honestly can not say I can tell I am faster with them than without.

They look and sound cool.

Work on your engine and hire a coach and you'll gain more time  than race wheels but won't look as cool.

I just upgraded to a set of HED3s for the races and I can definitely tell the difference in acceleration on the flats and up the hills. I too am working on the engine and I don't think that it made that big of a difference, but every bit helps. The Ksyrium Elites are pretty decent wheels to start with and I would be hesitant to spend the money, but if you find a good deal, I say go for it. Any of the Zipps are good and even the HED Ardennes or Mavic R-Sys if you want to stay away from carbon.

To throw you off course a bit, I believe that an aero helmet is supposed to give you more improvement per dollar than new wheels. I don't have one, but have read it enough times to think it must be accurate....

My suggestion (as always) for race wheels is disc rear and deep front.  Personally, I ride with a wheel cover on the back and a Zipp 808 on the front.

BTW, I see you go to Rocky Run.  Did I see you there this morning talking to Jerome in the locker room after we all swam?

yep, that's me. just getting into the first year of tri's so the training has picked up since February. Jerome is certainly quite an athelete.

I'll be sure to say hello. Thanks for the advice. Just have to get any new wheel purchases past the home finance committee.

After considerable research on the same desicion I ordered a set of Flashpoint wheels from prowheelbuilder.com. They are made by Zipp and use the same molds as non-dimpled 404's and 808's. I went with 60mm in the front and 82mm in the back. Price was about $1,075 with $100 credit back which I used to buy a new cassette. After following Ebay and craigslist for weeks, I felt this was the most bang for the buck for new wheels with a warranty.

Thanks. That's great info. I figured there had to be other options ot there. Warranty is a good idea vs. buying used and none.
