I didn't really make any specific resolutions, as that doesn't really work for me.

But I know several friends who have already fallen down a bit on their goals, and I've dug out this old article to help them keep everything in perspective. I thought I'd share it here too:

The Art of the Relapse, from Experience Life Magazine (Jan/Feb 2005).

"By watching ourselves cycle through periods of commitment, effort, success, faltering and discouragement, and then back into recommitment, we learn what our emotional tendencies and thought processes are in each of those phases of experience. Each time we go through that cycle, we have the opportunity to get smarter, deeper, stronger. We accumulate wisdom and a better sense of what makes us tick."

That's a good article. I do goal setting monthly, usually 3 goals at a time with action steps, and assess my progress each month. If I do poorly and it's still a concern I will put it into the following months list of goals and create new action steps that will hopefully help me reach the goal.

I make a point to re-read that article at least once a year. It's just plain good advice. Setbacks and relapse are just part of the process. It's a sign that something isn't working, and if we pay attention, we can learn to use them as feedback.

I didn't have a New Year's resolution, but in late December I decided I'd had enough of being overweight by about 30 pounds overweight and mostly sedentary. I resolved to make better nutritional decisions and to start back up training again. So far so good - I've lost 20 lbs since December 29th and I'm well ahead of my minimum goal of losing 1 pound per week! It was pure chance that it happened over the New Year weekend.

As far as 'more pigletude'  is concerned as a resolution ... well ... the quality and quantity have been excellent but I think I'd like to trade quantity for staying power.

My own pigletude seems to be holding up well despite some emotional storms, so I'd say that is in essence more pigletude.

I'm doing okay.  Not as well as I'd like but I am down 6lbs since January 4th.  It's been a rough couple of weeks for me energy wise relating to way too much going on and my eating always suffers.  But, I'm getting back on track and making better choices on a smaller scale.  Once the pressure of coaching lets up I'll be able to spend a bit more time taking care of the nutrition side of things.

I'm not much for New Year resolutions, but much of the article was very familiar.  I've pointed my protege's this way.

I didn't formally make a resolution, but had already planned a list of races for the year, so getting back into training and good nutrition was a goal. So far I've done well. I have lost the 7 pounds I gained over the holidays and am now working on upping my speed and distance in all 3 disciplines. For my 30th birthday in December I would really like to go on a century bike ride, but that is a long way away considering I've yet to ride 10 miles at a time. Haha.

I didn't make New Years resolutions in the traditional sense, but I did set a couple of big goals for 2011.  As far as those goals are concerned, I'm right on track.

Personally, I hate waiting until Jan 1 to decide to improve something about myself.  If there is something that I want to change, I set a goal and start trying to change it.  I don't need a 'holiday' for that!  (I do cycle through the above mentioned cycles often enough, though).

I don't usually set specific goals, like "lose 10 pounds" or anything like that. Since Jan 1 is also my birthday, I usually make a list of "gifts" or wishes that I would like for myself for the coming year. Usually along the lines of "strengthen connections with dear friends," "spend as mcuh quality time in nature as possible," or "continue to improve my inner dialog."

But throughout the year, I set different goals that require more specificity -- like training for a HIM or something like that. Being vague in training plans aren't a good idea.

Another article that I think fits in this discussion in from last month's O magazine:

http://www.oprah.com/spirit/Goal-Setting-Strategies-from-Life-Coach-Martha-Beck

Basically, she says that sometimes we set our goals based on what we think we want, but in actuality, we would be better off by doing some deep thinking about what it is we really want to feel.
