Subject: Oregonians, I need your help

Immediatly after walking into the office this morning, I received a job offer up in Klamath Falls, OR.  This was unsolicited, but I am considering moving there from Vegas.  Anyone here live in Klamath or have experience living there in the past?  I have a couple kids and am mostly concerned with safety and the quality of the school system.  Any and all info is appreciated.

I used to play Oregon Trail.....

I got diphtheria a lot....

So I stayed away from Oregon because I always assumed if I went there, I'd get diphtheria.

I know that helps.

Klamth Falls is a smallish city in the high desert. They don't get a lot of rain or snow. The summers aren't very long. We had snow for Memorial day one year and I've heard people talk about snow on the 4th of July. If you like to hunt and fish there is plenty of that close by.

We lived there for a couple years its mainly an agricultural area and not particularly wealthy. We live over the hill in Medford now about 75mi away.

Agreed, Willamette Valley specifically for me anyway. The rest of the state isn't to bad.

Portland is EXTREMELY Liberal, but as a state I think Oregon does a LOT of things right.  They are VERY progressive.  I can not specifically speak to where you are looking, but Oregon is a BEAUTIFUL state.  You are never too far from whatever you may want to do (surf, hike, ski, snowshoe, mountain bike, etc....)

Oregonian here (Eugene, worked for a while in Portland), when not overseas. The area around Klamath Falls is beautiful--high desert/plateau and mountains, close driving distance to Crater Lake. Potential for glorious biking and running, as well as skiing in winter. I personally would choose it over Vegas in a heartbeat.

That being said, it's a small city, somewhat isolated, and like most of Oregon has been brutalized by the economic downturn. The last time I was up there (I think two years ago) it seemed that about half the downtown businesses had shut down and/or were for sale. Lots of foreclosed homes. It's never seemed to me to be one of the more prosperous towns in Oregon, and it's obviously been hit very hard by the recession.  Your concerns about schools would be legitimate, at least in terms of funding. Most districts have had to make major cuts in the past five years (it's one reason I, and a lot of other Oregonian teachers, are working overseas). That being said, there are some great schools in Oregon doing impressive things on low budgets; I'm just not familiar with that district. I believe you can access test score data and other info online, or maybe private schools would be an option? Not sure what's available. Best of luck with your decision!

Thanks Hot Runner.  Nevada's school system is one of the last in the US, so we have our kids in private school now.  I would imagine anything will be an upgrade from paying for private school.  That's also good info about the recession and foreclosures.  We are living through that now in Vegas and our house value is in the toilet.  Anyway, thanks again for those pointers.

Exactly. I feel bad for all the Eastern Oregon folk who have their laws set by the Western portion. Kind of the same deal in Washington.
