So did we ever get a consensus as to what style of chinup/pullup is the best for triathletes?  What hand position and grip width is going to build my lats and shoulders most and, more importantly, help my swim?

Hiya KenD. Good topic. This is something I've strived for my entire life (a young 29 here). Starting pull-ups was traumatic for me as I was always lean but never defined on my upper back. Since I got on some body weight resistance exercises and now eat a Gluten-Free diet, my strength has surged.

I can do 15 pull-ups without rest depending if I swam that day or not. Building strength is the key no matter how much you weigh.

Before triathlon I was a climber.  Trained 6 days a week in the climbing gym.  I was able to do 20+ pulls in a set using only 2 fingers from each hand on a hang board.  I could do 5 - 6 sets like this.

Now I think I can do 1 maybe 2.

2 or 3 would be considered plural, yes?

I haven't tried for months, perhaps years.  I might be able to crank out 5, trying as hard as I can.

I don't know how many at a time per se.  I know that yesterday I did 40 pull ups, 80 push ups,80 squats in 5 min's.  Since that was my goal I was happy.

27 in a row is my best. That's after doing 30 reps of my body weight on the bench and running a 18:40 5k.
