Doughboy - 2008-02-24 6:24 PM

We are not doing the race, but we plan to go, since we live in Keller, and this is right in our backyard.

A good meeting spot that is definitive in the facility is the steps.  there are 2 sets of steps as you walk into the door.  Figure the right set of steps, as it will probably be cold in the morning, and everyone will want to be inside before the start.

I think we should come up with a BT meeting spot.  That would be great.  I actually live in the Keller area, but have just moved here.   Looking forward to meeting other TX BT'ers!

Should we meet where  Doughboy suggests-- at the front door at the right?

bkarhu and I are signed up for this as our first race of the season and a warm up (shake those transition cob webs loose!) to the Playtri HIM in April.  It will be my new tri bike's debut, so that should be fun.

Who all is signed up for this race, and is anyone making a BT meeting point on race day?

Chris

How is the PlayTRI?  I'm thinking about doing that one?   Hows the water temp in this area in April generally?  Will it be cold enough that one would want to wear their wetsuit?

New to area, so just wondering.

I didn't do the inaugural race last year, but several people here did and they enjoyed it.  Look it up in Race Reports to get an idea of what to expect.  Flat and fast (wind provided, of course) seems to be the overall review.

A wetsuit would definitely be prudent for that race.  Only 6 weeks left...zoiks!

My wife and I both did Playtri last year. She did the sprint on Saturday where the sun was out. No wetsuit but she said the sun on your back kept you somewhat warm. I raced Sunday and it was cloudy. No wetsuit for me either and it was cold the whole time.

Playtri reported a temp of about 68 on race morning I believe. This is not a real lake and is a little man-made thing of mostly run-off so it is a bit warmer than the real lakes in the area.

I've got a wetsuit for this year.

There are several great pools in Plano, Tom Muehlenbeck and Oak Point have lanes with deep water.... and water is salt filtered so no chlorine. Plano Aquatic center also has deep lanes but they hold alot of swim classes there so check the schedule online. Oak Point is rarely busy....

I had plan to run this triathlon as my first Tri- RACE. I am beeing a chicken and having second thoughts about signing up for this event. I started to learn how to swim 4 months ago ; now I can swim very very slow slow. I timed myself finishing 300 M at 10 min - I checked last year results and the average was around 7 min.

Swim 10 min
Ride - 45 min
Run - 25 min

I know I will be one of the last person of out the pool. And will struggle with ride - so my question is should I wait to do my first when I lower my times to be respectivable in June or just bite the bullet and do it two weeks.

Bite the bullet and do it!  It is a relatively controlled swim, as it is in a pool.  You will see people out of breath and holding on to one end of the pool to let others pass...that is not uncommon.  There will be a lot of 1st timers at this race, so no better time than the present (or in 2 weeks, for that matter)  If you can safely swim the distance, waiting for a "respectable" time is just stalling your enjoyment of this great sport.  Sign up, show up, race, have fun and you won't regret it.  Just my opinion.

Do it you will be fine.  You are estimating a 1:20ish total time and with adrenaline you probably will be faster.  I was in your boat last summer for DA's Monster tri at the same location.  I estimated an 8:30 swim which is what I swam in and was 230 out of 280 out of the water.  Bike and run were goog and I finished 80th overall.  You run time is right around where I ran and bike slightly slower.  I think you are faster than you realize.  The winner will barely break 1hr so you are only 20 min behind.  Trust me, a pool swim is your best bet for a 1st tri if you are nervous.

100 percent agree with the other posts.   A pool tri is probably the BEST way to get your feet wet (as it were) in the sport.   Much more controlled and is a GREAT way to do your first tri.

You'll be more competitive than you think.  25 minute run is VERY respectable, 45 minute bike is about average and your swim estimate is only a couple minutes off average.  Unless you are SUPER competitive and can't stand to come in 2nd as it were, you should do the race!!  Even if you are Super competitive, you should do the race.  Ya gotta get that first one under your belt, and you are more ready for it than you think.

Come have fun!  Celebrate your accomplishment of actually learning to swim!  You'll be glad you did!

Plus its a good course for a 1st race.  great pool to swim, 50m, 2 loop bike course with lots of room, and a nice flat run course.

Marcy (dodgersmom) and I live about 3/4 mile away from transition, and we will be having carbs for dinner on the 14th because of our 7.5 hour rides on Sat and Sunday.  If there is going to be a group dinner, Joes Pizza and Pasta is right here, and Marcy and I will be there.  If anyone wants to join, let us know and we'll get a reservation in.  If anyone wants to see the bike course or the run course we can help out with that too.

This is going to be my first Tri too!! I'm very anxious to get there, I wish it was this weekend. For you guys that did this race last year. I was wondering what the weather was like? I did a weather history search and found out that it was 40 degrees at 8:00 am same time last year. OUCH that is kind of cold. Did you guys wear long sleeves or gloves on the bike?

I cannot make the dinner Friday night, but I'm interested in meeting some other BT people.

Good luck to everyone.

It was cold last year but that really does not mean much around here.  I think I put a long sleeve cycling jersey on (pain in the butt to do).  The 10 day forecast shows 65 on Friday so hopefully it will be warmer for everyone.

Yeah, it was pretty cold last year.  I believe Marcy's (Dodgersmom) exact words to me in T1 were, "Laurie, there's steam coming out of your butt."  The nice thing about a cold race is that your legs are so numb that the hills don't burn your quads if you're undertrained (like I was).  I got by with a pullover and gloves for the ride.  By the time I got to the run, the sun came up enough to be fine in just my tri top and shorts.  Wasn't that bad.  Here are some of last year's pics from some of our albums...good times.  I should be cheering on the sidelines this time around.  People tend to frown on preggos exerting themselves.

I'd love to get toether with some TX bt'er for Dinner on Friday Night.   I live about 2 miles from Transition, and Joes sounds fine with me.  Put me down for at least 2 people, and possibly 4.  Just let me know what time.

What time is everyone going to packet pickup.  Isn't it at Bicycles, Inc off Rufe Snow and 1709 on Friday??

Looking forward to this race.  While it will be my 12th race, it's my first in about a year and a half -- I'm getting pretty excited to hit it again!

Just looked at the 10 day forecast on Weather.com.    While It's hard to beleive it with 3-4 inches of snow on the ground, the forecast for Race day right now is high 70, low 53 10% chance of precipt and partly cloudy skies.

Those are almost PERFECT conditions.  Maybe a bit cool for the first mile or two of the bike, but then perfect.   Hope it holds true, that's for sure!

heh

I didn't start weather watching for this race until the snow came down earlier this week.  Then it became a bit of a concern.  Then I read last years RR's and I got even a little more concerned.  My last race last year (tri, not running) was the US Open OLY and that was mid October and it was COLD in the morning.  The water was 25 degrees warmer (76) than it was outside (and with a north wind!).  I just want to sweat, damnit!

Anyway, Brian (bkarhu) and I may be down for a pre-race carb-load at the Italian place.  Maybe Doughboy or Dodgersmom can set that up.  I'll keep checking back here...

I think I might do the race... if my coach OK's it and if there are still spots. If our BT group ride leaves from there... I can race and then go finish my 3.5 hours on the bike with the rest of the BTers!

***EDIT*** No racing for me. Coach said no. My focus is riding 4.5 hours that day.

Well, you won't be the last person out of the pool. There is always someone slower... TRUST ME. Yes, the swim will be slow for you, and you might be near the end... but so what... you are doing it, right?

If you feel like doing it... DO IT! Just smile and enjoy being out there racing.

Thanks to all for the encouragements. I signed up yesterday and am getting the nervous/excited feeling just thinking about it. The final push was the poster who linked pictures from last year. It looked so much fun (albeit cold). I am going to make memories on Saturday and going to have fun and enjoy every single painful minute of it. Thanks again for the push!

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision
But today, well lived
Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
