Pre-race routine:

up early, loaded the car.raining on and off.had some porridge before i left and took some toast with me for the trip.
Event warmup:

got to site, registered and set up bike in transition.had a really good position on the rack near the swim exit/run start.
got ready to race by running up and down near the swim start.too cold and tide ripping thru too fast to do a swim wu.
Swim
  • 07m 35s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

took off quick and hit the 1st buoy with a couple of others with feet in my face and people trying to swim overme.copped a good kick in the face which later i found out made a cut on my nose.
kept a good pace cos i knew if i backed off the tide would get me.
rounded the last buoy and headed straight to the beach.little did i know the buoy had drifted with the tide and i ended up 20m down from the swim exit.marshalls told us to swim up but it was futile so all the competitors started running up the beach to exit.
swim felt like 400m not 300m
What would you do differently?:

nothing much.just improve swim fitness even more.

  • 00m
Comments:

good t1.sunnies then helmet and go.
Bike
  • 24m 30s
  • 13 kms
  • 31.84 km/hr
Comments:

got up to speed and focused on maintaing a good pace.took a gel 1/2 way thru and sipped water frequently.
thought i got a flat at one point and backed off but seemed ok so pushed hard again.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.happy with bike leg.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

racked bike, helmet off, shoes on and put racebelt on.
Run
  • 14m 19s
  • 3 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

had an idea someone was still in front on the run so pushed it to catch up.got passed by 2 younger categorys but couldnt go with them.
finally caught up to the runner i could see in front and ended up being a competitor from the 1st wave in 's' category.looked behind with 400m to go and saw no one so got into a sprint and passed him just before the finish.
still didnt know where i'd come until my wife came over and said 'i think you're first!'I wasnt sure until i saw the other runners in 'o' category start finishing.YAHOO!
What would you do differently?:

Faded a little on the run so need to improve cos i know i may not be so lucky next race.
Post race
Warm down:

endura,water,watermelon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

fitness and race practice.

Event comments:

went up to presentation and shook 2nd placegetter hand.3rd place didnt show.2nd placer said he'll get me next time.i said 'hopefully not!'
i believe he's going to train very hard before next race so i cant let up.
so far im 1st,2nd and 1st and he's 3rd ,1st and 2nd in the overall points.need to stay motivated and train hard for the next 3-4 weeks.

SS, I wouldn't worry about your swim fitness too much.  The fact you made it to shore that day is an ACHIEVEMENT...

To win your category is even better!!!    WOOHOO!!!

Yeah!  Better not let that second place getter get your slot next time!  Keep up the training!!!
