Do you allow yourself to gain weight in your off-season? How much? Also, any helpful tips you can share for getting back down to "fighting weight" smoothly in preparation for the coming season?

I gained about 8#'s so far this offseason (my first).  The majority of it is muscle as I started strength training also.  I'm keeping track of my body fat % ( this is how I can say the majority of the weight gain if muscle).

Once I start the tri specific training cycle, the strength training time will decrease and running/biking time will increase.  I expect weight loss due to this.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I swear, as soon as I pick up a dumbbell I also pick up 10 pounds of body weight-- although I also attribute a lot of that weight gain this offseason to added muscle in my legs from time spent on the CT. Man, I love the strength I gain in the offseason, but dropping the weight in the spring is getting harder every year.

I'm hoping that once my ankle heals and I'm running again that I'll begin shedding the pounds. But right now, dropping 10 pounds to get back to my race weight before my first race in 13 weeks is looking really daunting.

Look at body comp vs weight.  I am in the same boat lifting this winter.  I cant say eating has been totally clean, but I can tell between what I am doing in the weight room, visably and with what I am throwing down on the bike that there is more muscle there than last year.  My hope is that as the season starts up and vol/intensity pick up and as I decrease weights again that I will head back to end of summer weight or thereabouts.  The question should be are you kicking more azz than last year instead of weight.

On the bike, yes, no doubt. I'm just a little worried about carrying that extra bowling ball around with me on the run course.

I got as low as 166 somewhere between Aug HIM and October marathon.  I checked in at the holidays at around 174.  Struggling to knock it down to 165 by June.  I'm not making much progress though (currently hovering around 171).  Again, like others, I'm lifting 2X per week now.  Perhaps when endurance training volume increases, I'll shed that extra weight.  Although, I wish I could loose it before a 1/2 marathon on April 6!

8 lbs of muscle in a few months? Who's your trainer, Brian McNamee?

I seesawed more than I'm comfortable with over the holiday season...last winter I kept a constant weight throughout. Partly a function of a minor arch injury in Dec. that kept my running miles down and partly being in Maine for a week with no bike (not that I could have biked in that weather...). I was down to 165 in August and was around 168 for my last road race in early December. On 12/30, I was 177.5...the most I'd been in over two years. I knocked off the 9 lbs. I'd put on by the end of January, but I'm still floating around 168-170.5, where I'd prefer to be 165-167.5. That last 3 lbs. is proving to be a mother to work off...and it actually does show in my body comp, dammit...

Last year I bottomed out at 164 which I have not weighted since I was a JR in HS.  I hated the way I looked (I intentionally took off upper body muscle in order to get down there).  Lifted a bit and ate very dangerously over xmas.  Honestly I ate like a guy who has 6 months to live.  I got to 183.  I'm comfortable with this for a few reasons.  1) I know full well that I am in complete control of my body weight and WILL get back down to the 160's. 2) because I can (see no 1) 3) because I am happier when I lose weight than when I maintain.  A few people have literally punched me when I say this but 'I've gained weight just so I can take it off; kinda boring otherwise'.

So how to take it off.  Very straightforward really.  You know the answer.  Diet/exercise.  Diet - 60% protein, 30% carb 10% fat (give or take.  do the math), reducing overall calories, and spreading meals out.  Exercise, hit it 3 times a week for an hour or so each (more if you are actually training).  I presonally think you need to do some sort of tempo run/bike in there but don't have any written docs to back it up.

Well, I was at 164 in Oct 07.  I'm now at 172.  172-164=8  The bodyfat has actually decreased according to the scale.  Body fat reading 13-14% in Oct and 11-12% now.  And I'm using the same scale now as I did then so the inaccuracy of the scale is taken into account.  I've been recording the body fat % at the same hydration level (65%) as the hydration level does effect the measured body fat %.

I've gone up to about 150 now from an in-season average of 146 or so. Have been lifting more this off-season, training has slacked off a bit with a much more intense job here (training 10-12hrs/week v. 14-18), and my eating has been about 95% good. Once the sun comes out to play and we see temps above freezing those coupla pounds will melt away.

I've put on about 20 pounds. Most of it is muscle, my waist has only gone up about a half inch. I am almost back to the level of strength I had when I was 40 pounds heavier than I am now. I had an 1170 raw PL total for anyone who cares.

I can change my body weight pretty quickly when I want to. Just make sure to spread you meals out and eat clean. Right now I'm eating right around the most I ever have in my life but it's pretty much all healthy food so I am losing fat and keeping my muscle. I'm slowly on my way back down but closer to the DATT I will probably kick it up to four or so pounds per week.

Hooray genetics that want me to have muscle.

Side Note: MacNamee is a stupid a-hole that was willing to throw away his entire career for a bit of time in the spotlight. What a jerk. /rant
