Subject: Forte vs. Mavic

Anyone know the difference between Forte and Mavic?

I'm looking for a low-price 700 wheel set to get me through my first season and then plan on upgrading to HEDs.

I found Mavic Aksium Wheelset for $270

and Forte Titan Wheelset for $119.98.

 

The Forte is noted as regular priced $270 and on clearance.

 

Any reason I should avoid Forte?  Any bad experiences out there worth sharing?

Mavic is one of the top wheel brands in the world.  Forte is performance bike's store brand.  

 I have heard that the Forte Titans are actually Neuvation M28 wheels though.  They are supposed to be good wheels.  Would be perfect for training.

The Aksiums are a great basic training wheel, can't go wrong there either.  

I'd say as a race wheel, they would be pretty similar performance.

Mavic builds fantastic wheels, you will see them on pro bikes all the time. Forte is a house brand for Performance so I doubt they are total junk, but they won't be as good as the Mavics. You can also find Mavic parts in any decent bike shop, not so much for Forte.

You could always split the difference and get Neuvations for $199.

They have a good reputation for reliability, service and parts if you need them. The weight is darn good for $199 too. Cheaper than the Mavics, but they actualy have a bit of a track record unlike the Forte ones. Only downside to them is the ugly stickers, lots of people remove most of them.

I went with the Aksiums.  ALthough I heard that the Fortes were the same as Neuvations.

I am a big rider at 230#, coulpe thousand miles on the aksiums and still true as the day they were born.

Looked at the Neuvations but was scared away by the low spoke count and the fact that the spokes (I believe) aren't readily available but have to come from Neuvation.  They do get very good reviews, and have a roadie friend that loves them

When you are in the market for the HEDs, take a look at bicycledoctorusa.com.  Just bought mine there on sale

I don't have the Titans, but I've had a pair of Supergo Korso's for 2 years which are basically the same wheelset. I have about 2500 miles on the front and 1700 miles on the rear and have not yet trued the wheels. The rear has less miles as I mostly run that bike as a fixed gear now. They are on an old Schwinn I use mainly for commuting so they're not babied. The Korso rear survived the 1800 mi better than the 32spoke deep-V I had built for the fixie in it's 800 miles.

With that said, I was blown off the road by a huge wind gust and bailed off the bike into the grass (there was a 2' curb). The rear wheel didn't survive very well and is quite untrue, but I don't blame the wheel. I was able to ride the bike 1 mile back to my car and I really believe it can be trued.

For the money (I got the set for $90), I think they can't be beat.

Be wary of Performance/Nashbar (they're the same company) "sales." Those Forte wheels have been on sale for that price for over 6 months.

I'm not saying they're not good wheels, but the "deal" you're getting is not that great. The Fortes were never $270.

If I was purchasing, I would have gone with Mavic, due to past good experience, plus I'm a bigger guy too (6'2", 220lbs).

I know you've already made your purchase, but sometimes Excel Sports (excelsports.com) has some screaming deals on last year's wheels.

Another post saynig I know you bought the wheels, but just saw nashbar.com has Mavic Ksyrium Equipe (one step up from my Aksiums) on sale on the individual wheel page for just over $200 for the set (wheelset page shows them higher when bought together  :^ )    Darn good deal

Thanks for the follow-ups.  I figure for $150 (w/ shipping) - if I get through my NYC Tri this summer, it is money well spent.

 

I'll post a follow-up after a few miles on these puppies...

I ended up ordering a set of the titans.  For anyone else looking into them, make sure you double check the shipping charges before you've completely made up your mind.  It was approximately and extra $40 for oversized packaging.  I have some extra stuff in the order, so I backed out some for that.

Exactly! This was also the explanation of salesman when I inquired for these two brands. But I avail the Mavic one. No regrets, it's almost perfect.
