1:30:29!?! That's 37+ mph! He spent 50 minutes in transition 2 and then DNF'd. Anyone know who the guy is? I can't find him in subsequent years at the Florida 70.3 but I didn't check other 70.3 races.
I would guess that after clocking 37+ mph for 56 miles, he decided to heck with running, and left to explore his future as a pro cyclist, or else there was a crisis somewhere in the world, and he put on his superman costume and flew off to save the day.
Seriously, when you combine his 1:30 bike split with a 31 minute swim, he would have got into T2 leading the race by 20+ minutes. I think there must be an error.
I had a coach I used to work with back in the early 90's, who was a really good triathlete, it could be him, he was a very good cyclist but I don't think he was that good. That has to be a typo or something. Here is his web site, I know he won Powerman Alabama I think in 97 or 98 as an amature, and has finished Ironman in the 9:11 range.
No one, and I mean no one in the professional cycling world has ever averaged that much ....... The unpaced hour record is only in the 35 mph range .........
Bogus chip time, two looped and only did one .... or cheating bast-rd that cut the course.
Sounds like my local HIM, Harriman, last year. Some supposed young stud clocked a 2:30:43. Nearest competitor, a REAL stud, 2:59::10. The ONLY person to go sub 3 hours.
All of the locals knew NO ONE was riding this course under 2:45 in those conditions (55 degrees and raining) or probably ever. Turned out he cheated on the run too and was DQ'd.
Never to be heard from again. Made for some good fodder over on ST tho
The cool thing was with the DQ our own Johnnykay placed 3rd overall! Apparantly enough to entice him to return this year!
I was thinking all of those things too: bogus chip time, missed a loop, missed a timing mat, something. Seems like something they would make sure they didn't list as the top time ever for the course.

Actually, that's him, same guy. He just had open heart surgery in Jan. Nothing on his posted resume about holding the course record for the bike at the Florida HIM.
How did you find out he had open heart surgery? I trained with him for a few years, back in 95-97 we were on a muti sport team called Teamwork Atlanta,(back before I got out of shape). I'm surprise to hear that.
It was an announcement on his website that you referenced. I don't have any details, those are in his 'January newsletter'. But it was listed on his website. I'm sure it went fine, it was at the beginning of January and there wasn't anything else said about it.
It's a 1 loop course. He must have become injured, turned around after 10 or 15 miles then crossed the line back into T thus giving him the time posted.
