Subject: anyone had a dental implant?
hi all,

i thought this a good forum for a general question. i am going to have an implant on a back molar after months of waiting for the bone graft to take and having the offending tooth extracted back in december (after what seemed like thousands of dollars to foolishly try to save it...root canal/apicoectomy, etc, finally fractured and had it removed). Gosh, I wish I'd just had it removed at the very beginning. Anyhow, I'm going to have the implant done in a month and it's exactly one month before my second tri (first oly). Does anyone have experience with how fast you are back training? I am thinking if it's more than just a few days, I may postpone til after my oly? But I don't know anyone who has had an implant.

thanks for any input you might have.

Kim

No dental implants for me...my dentals are naturally big enough. Anything more than a mouthful is wasted. (thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week).

my mother has had a few.... I assume you're having the post implanted and that is causing your concern?  If I recall correctly the first few days it's sore but otherwise fine.  Even attaching the tooth to the post is fairly simple.  Motrin and you should be fine.  I'll double check with my mother but remember she's 69 and doesn't have a high threshold for pain....

I had one done.  Graphed the bone because they needed 8mm of bone, I had like 3mm.  Healed, then they put the post in.  I now have kevlar in there(because bone and gum grow at different rates) and finally had the implant put in.

You'll be fine a couple of days afterwards.  It's actually a fairly painless affair.  Just make sure you dentist knows when they are cleaning your tooth.  They have to use a special tool to clean it or else they scratch it.

I am in the same boat, only I had my tooth extracted (after root canal and apicoectomy) almost a year ago.  They waanted to give it 6 months for the bone to heal and luckily it does not look like I need any grafting.  I have been putting off the implant until after IM.

Good luck

Thanks for the input guys. Sounds like its not so big of a deal, so I'll just go ahead and do it as planned and give it a few days rest. It'll be nice to chew on that side again!

I have one of my front teeth as an implant. I got hit in the face with a broken baseball bat (it was metal, ripped in half) and it totally knocked out on of my two front teeth among other damage.

When I was 18 we did the implant thing. I had the surgery with my wisdom teeth and it was fairly painless. After putting in the receptacle, they covered it up for 6 months to let everything heal. Then they put in a post and the tooth and it was very easy.

All I got to say is when they put the post in, it feels very very weird having something screwed into your scull. And my doctor put it in too tight and had to get pliers to loosen it. It was a strange (not painful) experience.

Best of luck!

I had 2 implants placed. One was a baby tooth that I had removed after a lot of work and it still caused pain for no known reason.  The other was the baby tooth on the opposite side that broke into multiple pieces when I was eating some sweet tarts...My dentist did the procedure over a long period of time placing the posts and waiting several months before putting the crowns on.  My first couple of days after the posts went in were a Percocet induced haze, after that no problem.  Getting the crowns on was pretty easy too.  Because these were baby teeth they don't sit right to the gum so I find I have to really work the floss in under them or they become food traps.  Other than that, I love them.
