Subject: Heads Up

There's going to be a period of heightened rules enforcement 'round these parts for a while.

Too many posts dancing on the edge of acceptability, too much snarkiness etc. We don't want to see a precedent set for what's acceptable so we're going to be pulling in the reins a bit.

Personally, I attribute this to some pent up desire for people to get outside. It's taking a bit longer than usual up north for the winter to well and truly LEAVE and then you mix that with what seems to be a large number of late season colds/flu making the rounds and cabin fever set in. People want to get outside and TRAIN. I know I do.

So, having said that, the mods are going to be a bit quicker on the trigger.

Not sure if want you want to post is acceptable?

Err on the side of caution. Don't post it.

Read something that clearly shouldn't be here?

Don't take it upon yourself to point it out. Notify a moderator. That's what we're here for. We appreciate any and all notices of inappropriate posts. The fact is we can't read them all and we rely on people to let us know when something is posted that doesn't belong here.

Read an opinion that you don't agree with?

Don't take it personally and don't consider it your duty to correct someone for being what you consider to be wrong. This isn't the place.

Here's a very good general guideline to use when replying to something:

Post about the content, not the person. Posts criticizing other people on the board will be pulled and the poster warned.

The bar is being set very low here. Repeat offenses will result in temporary bans. I'm more than willing to hand out a few 48 hour or 1 week bans if they're warranted. If one or three people end up taking their ball and going home because they're made to play by the rules, that's ok with me. It'll give me more time to code.

TANs? One Word? Never ending Halloween ride threads?

This is a triathlon board. We have real work to do rather than monitor this nonsense.

So we're trying something new: no off-topic posting. Which means no CoJ. We'll leave it up here for a while, but in a read-only state so people will realize what's going on.

Hopefully this will help us all focus on what we're actually here for.

This is not an April Fools thing.

The sorta-kinda-TANs are on the endangered species list. We created the one TAN rule for a reason and that was to prevent a small number of people/threads from dominating the forum and rendering the forum all but useless for other discussion and users.

There's been an increase in TAN-like threads and we're going to be aggressive about removing them. They degrade the quality of the forum. And let's face it, CoJ can't afford to lose what little quality it has.

To this end, if a thread looks like it's becoming a TAN eg more than a few pages long with no real substance, out it goes. The Blah Blah Blah is the first victim. This thread has been classified to be a TAN and frozen. Attempts to revive it or start another one like it will just annoy the mods. Annoying the mods is not advised.

Think of it as culling in order to preserve the herd.

Again, this is not an April Fools thing.

Subject: Heads Up - Polls

Polls.

Voting in one is no different than posting in a regular thread and the board rules still apply.

Some people apparently don't think so, because they believe voting in a poll to be an anonymous activity. These people are mistaken. Your memberid is recorded when you add an option to a poll or vote on one. Hence the whole "You already voted on this poll" thing...

Polls about other BTers are now forbidden here. Well intentioned or not, they almost invariably turn creepy.

Also, the next time a poll is used to attempt to anonymously post a derogatory comment about another member here, the offender will be outed and banned. Immediately and permanently. We have absolutely zero tolerance for that kind of cowardly nonsense.
