Subject: A Touching, then Sad/Frustrating story....

Someone's log I was reading this morning reminded me of this story from a friend of mine.  (I will let someone else mention the log I was reading - I don't have permission).

Anyway, a good friend of mine was also dabbling in triathlon and had several riding buddies and fellow triathletes that he hung out with and was close to.  Saddly, one of them developed cancer and passed away, to the sorrow of his wife and those who knew him.  During the next couple weeks after the memorial, my friend was helping the widow with things around the house and assisting her to get things in order.  She looked at all her late husband's triathlon items and asked my friend if he would like her husband's bike.  Apparently, it was beautiful, top end, cervelo, only a year or two old.  My friend was hesitant it first, realizing how expensive the bike was and refused it.  But she insisted that it went to a friend who he rode with and spent time with.  He gratefully accepted it, and it caused him to ride more often, and compete in more, and bigger triathlons.  Partially, in rememberance of his friend.

I can only imagine the sentimental value of that bike.

The truely sad and frustrating thing.  My friend was doing yard work around his house (in a very nice neighborhood to boot), and was in and out of the garage for yard tools, trash cans, etc.  And someone walked up while he was in the back yard and stole the bike.....Just walked away with it.  If there has ever been a time I wanted to throttle someone's neck, was when I heard that story.  I can only imagine the loss my friend felt....

As this is COJ...

If the stolen bike was then used by another person who achieved improved fitness and competed in triathlons, wouldn't that simply keep the mojo going forward?

(the pessimist in me says the bike was simply sold on Craigslist for a few bags of pot, but we can invent a good end to this otherwise sad story).

If pot was legal, more readily available and cheaper, could this Cervelo theft have been avoided?

Maybe they did away with the Athena/Clydesdale division and the person felt pressured  to get that extra edge, and the bike was too tempting to resist?

Or, like leaving the top off the convertible, is this not really the fault of the homeowner since they left such a valuable item exposed to the world?

Crap, uh Mr. Bear, can I use your quote?    If not, can you requote the whole "2 kinds of cyclists" thing so I can use that again?

Thieves are jerks!

Not that it makes it the situation any better, but a bike is just a "thing" and at least the thief couldn't steal your friend's fond memories of his pal.

(It still makes me angry hearing about it though, so I can only imagine how your friend feels!)

Sure, maybe ask Mr. Aikidoman too, as he inspired it.

IIRC, the other one went something like, "There are two kinds of cyclists: those who 'Ride Lots' and the slow ones."

FWM.  I don't know how it applies to the OP or how I inspired it, but I like the quote.  Good thing for me, I'm moving from the later to the former, so I know it's true.....

But are you talking about the stamp quote or cyclist quote?  Both are good.

Not the second one about the two kinds of cyclists, but the first one that I (and now morey) have as signatures. That's the one he asked for permission about.

A couple other people have it too, I have noticed.
