When i swim over 2500 yards i noticed that i get a rash on my right upper chest near my shoulder.  It's from my chin hitting this area when i turn my head to breath, just wondering if this rash is showing that i am doing something right when i swim or something wrong.

I get the same red spots on both of my shoulders (bi- lateral breathing) but not anywhere near my chest.  I tend to shave everyother day and try to time it for my swim workout days to keep the rash to a minimum.
My 0.02$ as I  have no formal training as a swimmer but was a Provincal level waterpolo player.
I think it's a sign of good swimming form.  You are breathing in the sweet-spot created by the wave that your head makes.

36 hours after I shave is the no swim zone.  I will actually leave the pool bloody on my left shoulder if I'm not careful.

This topic comes up routinely. Personally I don't think you should be rubbing your chin to your shoulder, and certainly not your chest.

To me that illustrates your tucking your chin and/or trying to get your hips up by sinking your head. You want to push your chest into the water, not your head. Your head should stay neutral, or in my opinion looking forward slightly.

It also leads me to believe that your breathing at an odd spot in your stroke.

Just my $0.02.

I'm not a swim expert by any means. When this happens to me (neck and shoulders) I know it's time to shave. In fact, I try to shave every night before a swim workout.

i thought i was the only one with this problem. I generally dont shave at all, but if i do, i am susceptable to rashing on my right shoulder(breathing side), mostly in open water swims.

I went through this one last year.  I got conflicting reports on it too.  My swim "coach" told me it was a good thing.  That my form was on.  Others here told me it meant that I wasn't rotating my body enough, and that I was trying to breath "too long".

The folks here where right.  I wasn't exhaling enough under water, and I was trying to keep my head up too long.  I also wasn't getting enough body rotation to allow for longer the breath.

No burns now.

Try the really thick aquaphor after you've already got the "patch".  It helps.
