I'm doing Little Pepper.  I like hilly courses, so it should be fun.

I did this last year... as I recall there is only one bad hill on the bike, it is pretty much right at the start of it, as you come out of the park. On the second loop of the course, you are coming downhill right before this hill, so it isn't as bad the second time around. The rest of the course I would characterize as "rolling."

The run course was BRUTAL. Basically, you run up and down the hill I just mentioned. But, I think they are changing the run course from last year.

edit: I just went back and re-read my RR from last year.  Maybe the bike was hillier than I recall, but the biggest one is that first one I mentioned.

Actually they've changed the course... again.  I don't think it's been the same since they started racing a few years ago.  Best as I can tell from course maps, they've kept the Little Pepper course the same as the Sprint course from last August.  No two loop bike course.  The big hill that Tim mentioned is no longer part of either course.  You turn left when you leave the park on the bike, and the run course is partially through a field to avoid going up that big hill (in its entirety).  I wouldn't say the run course is brutal but it is definitely of the more challenging sprint run courses that you'll find.

According to SetUp Events, it's the exact same course as the Fall race this year.

Less than two weeks -- first tri of the year for me!

I went to drive the course yesterday on the way to DC but could not find that little bitty sign on 29 that points to the lake. What I did find were about half a dozen new traffic lights, rant rant rant. Anyway, I'll get probably there this week and let y'all know. If I had a thermometer, I'd stick it in the lake and let you know the water temp.

Looks like they posted the water temp today as 70 F.  I don't see how that's possible though, considering the air temp has barely gotten over 70 the past week.

Can't be 70. The pool here was 66 yesterday and it is a much smaller body of water, plus it has a solar heater to boost the temp. Whatever. It will be chilly by my reckoning.

The bike goes through some right purty countryside.

Good luck everyone!

It's possible for the lake to be 70.  Keep in mind that a large (speaking relative to pool) will take a much longer time to heat up/cool down.  Just because it hasn't be 70 degrees for a few days doesn't mean a lake will cool down much during that time frame.

Little Pepper will be my 2nd tri ever (last one was 3 years ago) and first OWS. A little nervous but also very excited. I was also surprised to see the temp as 70. I was at the park last weekend and it was cold and rainy. Only dipped my toes in the water but it felt chilly. Glad I spent the $200 on a wetsuit.

Best of luck to everyone!

Best advice if you're nervous about the OWS. Set up your transition area, slip on your wetsuit, march down to the water, walk right in and start swimming around.

A lot less stressful than trying it out when there are a bunch of bodies all around. All the people gawking from the shore will figure you're some kind of old hand at it, too.

BTW, expect it to be slimy and muddy on the bottom...

Hope everyone raced well today.

Anyone know why the top 2 finishers were DQ'd? I saw them on my way out on the run, and they were both pretty close, and there was a significant gap to the 3rd place guy (who ended up winning as a result). Just curious if anyone knows the story.

Nevermind.  Saw the posted results.  They clearly shorted the run course, as both times were in the 13s.

Eh, they were right. The water was about 70 degrees.

The weather held off so we had what was for me perfect racing conditions - cool and cloudy. What beautiful views of the Blue Ridge from parts of the course, too. It was real fun. How'd it go for y'all?

Thought the conditions were great considering at one point the reports said scattered thunderstorms.

Overall I was happy with my time, below 2hr. I was happy with my swim time, unhappy with my bike (over 1hr, ugh!), and happy with my run time. Good baseline and experience for future races.

Looking for my next one now.
