Pre-race routine:

Forgot my checkbook... panhandled the $25 dollar race day fee. Had some coffee and an Izze Soda, water and found a dumpster to pee behind.

This race was a tune-up/speedwork session to help prepare me for my upcoming Marathon on May 4th (The Colorado Marathon in Fort Collins), where I hope to finish in under 2:50.
Event warmup:

Some dynamic stretching and strides with FastFoward Sports.
  • 18m 18s
  • 3.15 miles
  • 05m 49s  min/mile

Wind. 25-35 mile gusts... much of it in my face. 15 mile an hour sustained winds. It was frickin' hard!

The sprint to the finish was in slow motion and my HR was maxing out!

Note about wind:
As a runner it’s important to know how the elements affect your performance. Even when a wind is not present, when racing at a 6:00 mile pace, you generate a headwind of 10 miles per hour. When that headwind picks up to 15mph, the effort to run a 6:00 minute mile is equivalent to running a 5:00 minute mile with no wind. “According to Dr. Jack Daniels’, a three-hour marathon runner loses 11 seconds per mile when running into a 5-mile-per-hour headwind and 25 seconds per mile when facing a 10 mile-per-hour headwind. That’s an extra 5 to 11 minutes over the marathon distance; but a four-hour marathoner running the entire race into the wind loses approximately 15 to 32 minutes with the same winds.”
What would you do differently?:

Nada... I wish it wasn't so windy. I think my effort was great. I'm sure on a good day I would have been at or below 17:30 on this course...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The wind, the wind, the wind!

Event comments:

I think that this was a great test to see where my training and fitness is at. I would have loved to have better numbers - the wind and the long course did skew my results, but my intention was to get ready for my marathon... not PR. Although, I try to PR every race.

Happy with my mile splits: 5:37, 5:55, 5:59.

There have been a lot of windy days lately.  You probably would have cracked sub-18 with no wind.  Nice job!  Surprised your time didn't place you guys out there over 40!
