you won't really ruin the officers day off he will get full pay if his off day it will be overtime the only free time that will be wasted possible is your 3 to 4 hours or so unless they dismiss the case. If this is about the principal or whatever pay the fine its' not worth fighting money wise and you ran the sign and such how much do you make hourly i'm sure it's more than the 120 when you figure the 3 to 4 hours you will spend at the courthouse dealing with this....

You are assuming the judge is gonna ask him "did you come to a complete stop".

Heh...I thought that was a pretty safe assumption in a case where a guy is alledged to have not stop at a stop sign. What do you think the judge is gonna ask him? "Son, did you pull the trigger?"

(this whole thread is like those crowd interviews they do on the People's Court...

My unpopular honest reply would be that as cyclists, we're always wanting the same rights to use the roadways as automobiles and want to be respected on the roadways as automobiles, so why wouldn't we be expected to follow the same rules of the road and laws as automobiles?

I'll agree that the cop likely had a bee up his arse in his bonnet and 9 out of 10 cops might turn a blind eye, but dude, the law is the law and just as I try to set a good example for my kids by always wearing a helmet on the bike, I always follow the rules of the road when on the bike. Respect begets respect.

I totally agree with you as far as the letter of the law and an example to set -- except for at a 4 way stop (around here) most cars don't come to a complete stop. Especially when it's busy everyone is rolling through at a slow pace. If a cyclist were to come to a complete stop, they'd never get through the intersection. And don't get me started on the number of people who have no clue about who has the right of way at a 4 way stop. People need to learn how to freakin' drive.

A friend of mine is the cop that patrols our neighborhood. I once asked him about this very thing. His response was that if a cyclist was clearly being careful and adhering to the spirit of the law, he had better things to do than harass a cyclist. He did concede that many of his colleagues will stop a cyclist before a car just because of said bee in their bonnet.

I can't believe this thread is still going on...

If you don't have many moving violations, book a court date. Tell the judge you're sorry, you didn't realize, blah blah blah. Chances are very good that, if it's your first infraction of this kind, the judge will dismiss the charges. I got a couple of tickets dismissed just for going to court and pleading mea culpa. Worst case, you still have to pay the ticket but what do you have to lose by at least attempting to get the charge dropped?

Sucks you got a ticket but that means I'll take a bit more care about coming to a complete stop myself.

there is a place in nashville TN that is called Belle Meade, its an upscale part of town and its known that you had better stop! These guys watch it like no other, i was stopped once "for running a stop sign" and the cop pulled up be hind me, i thought it was a joke. so finally pulled over. he got out, asked if he knew why i was pulled over? of course i was like "huh?" for running the stop sign. i didnt loose my cool, and basically told him i had no idea, he let me go for a warning. i asked is this normal, and he said that the local community complains about cyclist running stop signs all the time. lesson learned. i stop now
