Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 3s
Overall Rank = 65/155
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/8
Pre-race routine:

Had a cup of instant oatmeal. Loaded all the gear except for bikes into the Explorer the night before.

Put on bike rack and both bikes at 6 am.
Event warmup:

None. Chatted with other races and people from the OC tri club.
Swim
  • 09m 14s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Hips sank a lot during crawl this year. Was really tired from the run and bike. Just survival mode on the swim.

Must have had a huge lead over age group before I got to the swim.

Didn't suck as bad as I thought. First swimmer in age group. 83 out of 155 overall swimmers. Still bad, but not as discouraging as I thought.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swim drills more. More swimming.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Reverse tri. Transition was fast.
Bike
  • 41m 47s
  • 12.75 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Absolutely crushed the hill. Passed lots of people on the hill each time. Did the hill 4 times. Nobody passed me on the hill. I think this is where I won the age group.

Yes it slowed me down a lot. Yes I was tired at the top of the hill. And I was going faster than the others. College kids blew right by me on the straight aways, but held my own or better against everyone esle.

Cornering was way better than last year.

All those rides up Santiago Canyon made me much stronger.

Last year averaged 16.1 mph. This year 18.3 Max speed 30.1 mph.

Aero bottle was 2 sips from empty. Would not normally drink that much for 12 miles, but it was hot. Love the aero bottle except it rattles too much.

Second in age group on the bike, only 15 seconds slower than age group leader. And had a 4 minute advantage on him on the run, and beat him by a minute in the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Keep riding hills, and more T.I.T.S.( time in the saddle) so that I am even better next year.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Unracking the bike, my bike got stuck and I pulled one edge of the rack about 6 inches toward me. Cost me about 5 seconds. Not a big deal.

Ran with bike. Mtn bike shoes.
Run
  • 26m 33s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Ave hr 171. Ave Hr last 20 minutes 175. Max 180. Ran about as hard as I could.

No race start markings. Just stand in open field. Never heard race director say go. Was chatting with others, all of sudden the whole field just took off running, so I did too.
What would you do differently?:

This was about as good as I could do. Little slower than last year, but 30 degrees warmer too.
Post race
Event comments:

Won age group for the first time. What is there not to like.

They were supposed to have the results up within hours. They did on the board at the race within minutes.

Nothing on the internet yet though.

Came in ahead of 3 male collegiate tri team members and ahead of 6 female college tri team members. Won't say that the top 3 guys in the 55- 59 age group kicked my azz.

Fun course, only one hill. Mostly flat, with several opportunities to corner at speed.

College kids did a great job of putting this on.

Reverse tri so the swim was last. Almost 2 minutes faster than last year. But my heart rate was 175 off the bike. Still breathing crazy fast when I got to the pool. First 75 meters was ok with the crawl, but between waves and people grabbing me, slapping me from behind, I lost my breath and sidestroked a lot. At least goggles didnt break this year and these goggles didn't leak like last year. Anti fog worked well.
