It appears there are plenty of them around.

Didn't realize this was such a big issue when I made the op.

What I'm getting out of it is that, as I suspected alot of people (present company mostly excluded of course) are either lacking manners or common sense.

All of this goes out the window tomorrow as I will do my first sprint tri. I am preparing to suck it up in the mayhem of the kick and grabfest of the 1/2mile ows.

Well, I'm pretty spot on with where my feet land. I'm sure I could have pushed off above/below her leg. No pain inflicted, but it would have scared her out of the lane.

KSH, you rock, we have a new term now, pull a KSH on he/she/it! LOL

HA! Funny. I look so nice in my avatar...

I do have to say though, I have banned myself from pool swim tri's if at all possible. I get way too aggressive in the pool. I don't pull people under or swim over them... but man if they put a faster time down than me... and they are hanging on the wall... that pisses me off.

In pool swim tri's I have:

1) Yelled at people hanging on the wall. There were so many of them (all with faster times than me and I'm not a slow swimmer) I couldn't even push off the wall. I yelled, "GET OFF THE WALL".

2) Played with a guys toes for 25 yards. Yep, just stayed back there and played with them as passing was too dangerous (head on collisions and what not). Which I will not say was nice. I know it wasn't. Thus... I have banned myself from tri's with pool swims. I get way too annoyed with people.

This is my first year ever swimming laps in a pool, as I've always just swam in lakes etc.  It took me a while to learn some of the etiquette and I generally err on the side of just waiting for a lane to clear out since my gym is usually pretty open when it comes to swimming lanes.  However, the other day, I was in my own little world, doing a 75 min swim with long sets, and suddenly, in the middle of the pool, someone taps my head.  Scared me to death and I about inhaled a gallon of water.  She said, "I'm sharing your lane" and I basically was so startled I just kept on swimming.  On the very first lap she started breaststroking (we have narrow pool lanes) and basically kicked me every time we passed.  I just worked on my kicking as well and pretty soon she moved.  Is it ever ok to tap someone on the head in the middle of the pool?  I'm always happy to share my lane if they are waiting at the end (and if they don't kick me on every pass).

No. It's not ok. And to announce that you are sharing a lane is rude, rude, rude. You ask to share a lane and then the person asked should say okay. You don't own the pool, but neither does the other person.

If this lady had tapped me on my head in mid-stroke she would have gotten an earful.

Most pools I have swum in during Lane Swim times have 6 "lanes" - but only 2 ropes installed instead of 5.  So essentially there are 3 large "lanes".  We swim up the rope (either side of the lane) and back down the middle.  Passing is best done if the person being passed pauses at the end of the pool to let the fast swimmer go past.

X2 - This is the correct way to circle swim. I swim with 20-30 kids at swim practice this way and it works great!!
