Pre-race routine:

Meant to get there early but I also wanted to get some sleep so we didn't leave for the race until 5:40. Had oatmeal and coffee on the way and some electrolyte hot cider. Checked in. Set up transition.
Event warmup:

Chatting w/ Ocky, Julia, Chrisp and Teddy. Jogged a bit w/ Chrisp. Watched elite swim for a minute. Couple potty stops. I'm finally ready to get my wetsuit on and we get the 2 minute warning - ha ha. I notice there's no one on the other side of the rack so I slide my towel and bike under the rack and rearrange stuff. Grab swim stuff and run for the grassy knoll to get ready. Run back in to transition to put body glide etc on towel and make sure I'm not forgetting anything. Nothing like rushing at the last second to get the adrenaline flowing. Jog to start of swim, splash around in the water a bit, then stand in the sun to try not to freeze.
Swim
  • 21m 14s
  • 749 yards
  • 02m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Couldn't catch my breath so kept breathing on the right side especially on the last leg with the waves coming from the left. Tried breathing on the left for a while on the first leg so my face was in the sun to try to thaw it out. Really considered getting hauled out by the boat, but after I passed the 1st buoy, I was committed. Swimming into the waves I swallowed a couple of them -- had to swim on my back for half a minute or so to cough the water out.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. My swimming really sucks. Really really sucks.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Easy getting wetsuit off, but difficult getting coat on. Of course I didn't have any trouble with this in practice last night. Fastest T1 of AG.
What would you do differently?:

Get shoes that don't require socks, learn how to do moving mount.
Bike
  • 56m 24s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Found a Clif gel in my bento box - yay. Before the race I hadn't thought I'd need it, but ate half before a bump in the road bounced it out of my bag. Guess I should have picked that up after the race....

Took one bottle of Clif electrolytes on the bike and finished it.

Tried to stay on the curls since I didn't feel stable enough to use aerobars. Seemed to help. Tried to keep cadence up and just keep pushing.
What would you do differently?:

Ride the course beforehand so I have a better idea how fast I can take curves.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Fastest T2 of AG.
What would you do differently?:

Learn moving dismount
Run
  • 28m 24s
  • 3.17 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Feet were completely numb for 1st mile or so, then pins and needles til the finish. Didn't feel strong, so just focused on cadence.
What would you do differently?:

Not gain weight on taper for marathon. Practice bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked gear to car. More chatting with Ocky -- fun seeing him! Drank Endurox (it was still cold from the ice cubes - yay) Stretched waiting for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, especially swimming. Need to learn to trust aerobars and learn how to do moving mount/dismount.

Event comments:

Looked like good food afterwards, but I couldn't eat yet. Glad I decided to do this race. Ted and Julia and Ocky were enthusiastic spectators -- thank you!!

Final results posted on website show me at 3rd place, but the 2 women who beat me only ran half the run.

Sounds like and interesting (challenging) day in Bear Creek.    What's this about only running 1/2 the run???

Great race!  It is tough to breathe in cold water.  It happens to everyone.  Congrats on the podium finish.
