Overcast
Total Time = 2h 36m 52s
Overall Rank = 35/116
Age Group = M 20-24
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

Put in my headphones and sat down and closed eyes to visualize the race.
Event warmup:

Light stretching. Jog down to swim start
Swim
  • 24m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

I do not know why I didn't start in the front of my wave. Climbed over about 5 guys to get to the front. Stupid move. Didn't go as hard as I should. My shoulder was tight so I decided to slow down a little and not pull so hard.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up swimming, maybe prevent the shoulder tightness. Start in the front of my wave so I do not have to climb over all the slow swimmers who decide to start in the front. I also need to go all out on the swims, it is my best event so I need to establish a larger lead. It also doesn't seem to affect me when I get on my bike so why not go all out....?
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

Bunch of people weren't running in T1. So I felt like a superstart running by people. They will all run by me later...
This long T1 hurt my 2hr35min goal for the race, so I am slightly bitter
Bike
  • 1h 15m 2s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.87 mile/hr
Comments:

I did a 70 miler two days prior so my legs didn't have it on the bike. Also my IT band was knotted up around my hip so I couldn't push a bigger gear. Blah!
What would you do differently?:

Training through a C priority race is one thing. Doing the longest and hilliest ride of your training so far 36 hours prior is another.
Do not make that mistake again!
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Did this fast. Fastest T2 for me so far
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 53m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Like always, I cannot run fast!! I hate being passed by everyone and their mothers. I love training, I love racing, I love being healthy and meeting other triathletes. So I love the sport in general. But I do not do triathlons for any of those reasons. I do them to compete. I know I need to take my licks as it is my first season and all but I hate being beat by anyone at anything. So seeing everyone run by me makes me mad. I am also in a dilllema because everytime I crank up my run volume I get injured. So I'm planning on ending this tri season maybe in Oct so I can focus solely on running all winter. But now we are getting off topic so....
Bad stomach cramp first mile, loosened up around mile 2. Told myself now that I'm loose I better get a negative split. But wound up taking about 10 seconds longer coming back then going out. With all this run negativity I did improve my Oly run time by 3 minutes from the Havasu Oly on March 22.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, stretched, ate the BBQ

What limited your ability to perform faster:

An intense training week. Tight shoulder, tight IT band, dead legs

Event comments:

Old school atmosphere. I liked the prayer and national anthem to start the race because it was different. Made me feel like I was back in high school before a big league game or something...
Wish they had a drink sponsor. Post race drink was water. Run course not marked too well. Great police in intersections! Nice marine volunteers! Amazing views!

Yup, totally remember seeing you at the swim start and again out on the run course.

You really rocked that swim and I would agree you need to line up in front. Prolly the only reason not to is to find some fasties to draft off of for a while before dropping the hammer on them

Nice bike split especially with your training volume heading into this race.

You did well on the run too. This was a tough course with those rollers early and again late in the race. they conspire to make our calves and hamstrings cramp, complain and in  general not work the way they are supposed to.

Sounds like a good idea taking some time to focus on the run. I did that 2 years ago and don't regret it for a minute. I bagged a few triathlons to spend most of 2006 running marathons but it will well worth the time. (Except that now I am a Marathoner and have to balance two different seasons)

Great job out there and hope we get a chance to meet at another race soon
