Yes you can use your mountain bike. A road or tri bike would be best but you don't have one, so have fun and use what you have. The course is flat with one small hill about 4 miles from the finish. Great race.

Also there is the Rip Van Winkle Tri at the end of this month that you can also use your mountain bike for. It is a short race 400yd swim, 12mile bike, 2 mile run. This race is just outside of New Iberia on June 29th.

I will guarantee you'll be locked out if you wait until the end of July, but I can understand you wanting to get a race or two under your belt first.

I'm in. Gonna be my longest tri yet. Did T-Gator on 13 July, and was DEAD LAST in the swim. That's a crappy feeling backstroking the entire way!Yell

You might want to work on that. Half a mile is a long way to be backstroking.Cool

I have a cycling buddy who has tried everything possible to learn how to swim to be able to do triathlons, but can't for the life of him. We talked him into at least trying CajunMan, back in 2003. He came out of the water in 34:46 (my worst time has been 21:20), then passed 87 people on the 18-mile bike course. He's done plenty of duathlons since then, but no tris.

I start master swim next Monday. I'd love to get under 15 minutes at CajunMan, not sure there's enough time...

You're right, that is a long way. I gotta lotta heart, but if it stops working, it does no good! I'm going to hit it hard between now and then.  My time was about 15:30 for 525 meters.  I'm not out of breath or completely exhausted, I'm just not fast.  When 46 yr old local stud John Deshotel finished just in front of me I didn't feel so bad, until I realized that he started 6 minutes behind me!  Averaged 18.3 on the bike, which is decent for me.  I don't have a carbon fiber high speed bike, just an aluminum cannondale with decent components.  Need some more leg power too, it's not the bike.  My run was pretty slow for me, avg'g 7:58 for 2.5.  Still having a tough time finding my race pace.

Subject: CajunMan Tri - 2008-->Cancelled!
From RD Rusty Bex:
After much deliberation, discussion with the CajunMan Triathlon Race Committee (CMTRC), local authorities, and an overall assessment of the course a decision has been made on the 2008 CajunMan Triathlon.

We have decided it is in the best interest of all parties involved to CANCEL the CajunMan Triathlon.  Several factors lead to this decision – all factors which were debated and discussed at great length with the CMTRC.

The bike course is not safe.  There are major issues with trees, branches, layers of leaves, covering the majority of the bike course.  In addition, there is probably a 150 yard area where the course is totally covered by water.  Utility trucks lined the two-lane road (of which there are no shoulders) trying to repair the many electrical lines that were down.  Try to picture what I saw – and you would understand that safety on the bike course would be compromised.

In addition, we do not have electricity at the facility (ULL – MSTC) where we run our operations for the race.  This would severely hamper how we run the race – if in fact we could run the race w/o electricity.

Local law enforcement, Acadian Ambulance, etc. are available but our event would put a strain on them.  I think we should prioritize in a situation like this.

Also, the level of volunteerism would be lower as many of our regular volunteers are helping and assisting others in the area, that are in need of assistance.  This depletion of volunteers would absolutely compromise the setup and ultimate safety of the race.  I, for one, will be needed by family and friends in helping them recover from the devastation of Hurricane Gustav.

I want everyone to know that we did everything possible, explored every option to have an event this year – but it just wouldn’t fall into place.  I understand this will upset some people.  However, if I save one person from injuring themselves from an event that is not up to CMTRC’s standard of safety – then I will take all the nasty emails and phone calls that come my way.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all that were affected by Hurricane Gustav.  Baton Rouge , Houma , Thibodaux , Morgan City , New Iberia , St. Landry Parish, and all of Acadiana, etc. we understand your difficulty and we hope for the best.

And last but not least, a few more points.

1.  The race will not be scheduled for a later date this year.  But I am looking forward to CajunMan Triathlon ’09!!
2.  Packets will be available to all participants starting this Saturday.  Smoothie Factory in Lafayette will have them stored for months.  Whenever you are in Lafayette – you can drop by and pick up yours and all of your friends who entered the race.

Thanks for understanding.  This was not an easy decision and I probably aged 10 years in the last 3or 4 days as the pendulum of emotions swung back and forth many times.

Really disappointed... as this was going to be my longest and A race in '08. Also my last race of the season.

See you all at the T-Gator's next year and a HIM as well (Galvezton or New Orleans)

Only bright spot was a concession from wife to do BR 1/2 marathon

I haven't heard about the entry fee.  Will they refund? Use this money for the 2009 entry fee? or are we SOL?

It wouldn't hurt to email him to ask. If not a refund, a discount for next year would be nice. I've heard of some races cancelled by Hanna offering 50% off next year's registration...
