Subject: 2008 Age Group National Championships qualification
My roommate sent me an email today about the 2008 Age Group National Championships qualifications because he thought maybe I qualified with my finish in the Capital of Texas Triathlon. (my first tri!) (www.usatriathlon.org/Home/Events/TeamUSAQualifyingEvents.aspx)

supposedly the top 33% in each age group qualify. In my age group (F 25-29 Athena) I finished 2nd, but since I am an Athena athlete I don't know how that factors into qualification.

Does anyone know if theres an athena division in the national championships? I would think so and I would just apply, as the site suggests, but I don't exactly have $110 to gamble on a non-refundable registration fee. I'd like to be a little more clear on qualification...and I figured at least one of you gurus would have some input.

I'm not sure about Triathlon but there is not in Duathlon.  I would contact someone from the USAT site for qualification.

I highly doubt it.  Age groups are just that.  All of the subdivisions you see at times (Athena/Clyde, masters, first timers) aren't represented in past results either.

I believe it's just AG, and doesn't take division into account.

I e-mailed USAT about this a couple of months ago, but never heard back. Since there's no elite, military, novice or clydesdale/athena divisions at Nationals (like there are at most local races), it seems like every in a particular age group (no matter what division they are racing) should be counted when the percentages are calculated.

In my case, typically half of the 40-44 males race in divisions other than AG, but I beat most of the novices and clydesdales. So shouldn't I get credit for it?

Nationals does have a clyde/athena division. Just look at last year's results.

That being said, I'm not sure if you can qualify with AG athena results. You might have to put the athena results together with your regular AG and see how you placed or look at how you did in comparison to all athenas under 39.

The qualifications standards just says 'age group' so you'll have to email them.

gotcha. I emailed them yesterday. Hopefully I hear back..

thanks!
