Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 161/436
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/36
Pre-race routine:

Up early. Bowl of chicken noodle soup, cup of coffee, fruit smoothie.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike the 14 miles to the race.
Swim
  • 25m 36s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in the second to last wave, so there was a 20 minute wait from the first wave to ours. I felt great throughout the swim and nailed my pre-race prediction of between 25 & 26 minutes.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

I really, really suck at transitions. I had trouble getting one of my size 14 clown feet out of my suit.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 51s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.30 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to go under 1:05. I was a little too conservative at the start, but by mile 4 or 5 I was sitting at my goal power output. I felt like I was working harder then my speed was reflecting. I averaged 30 watts more this year then last year, but only went 1 minute faster.

When I was leaving the transition area after the race I noticed my front brake was rubbing. I'm pretty sure it wasn't during my ride to the race, but I suppose I may have hit the brake when hanging my bike on the transition rack causing the brake to go off center. Of course I may have done that when I was taking it off to leave, so I don't know.
Transition 2
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

I struggled getting one of my socks on. Those clown feet again.
What would you do differently?:

I don't do a lot of short course racing, but I'm planning on a few after Lake Placid and I should probably start using speed laces, or yankz, or something similar.
Run
  • 52m 17s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

On a positive side I ran hard, and consistently the entire run. I also took 4 minutes off of last year's run time.

My left hip flexor hurt from the beginning, and the pause I have in my stride when my left foot lands was giving me problems.
Post race
Warm down:

Rode home. Took a slightly longer route and just spun easy.

Congrats! I live about 14 miles from Blue Lake also, but wouldn't have the courage to ride there for the race! Blue Lake is going to be an annual event for my wife and I, and I hope to make it my first Olympic some day.
