I'm in for Kiawah. I signed up last year but wasn't able to run b/c of a knee injury. I cruised by your blog. I'm planning on running the Whiskey Rd. 10k also. My parents live there and it gives me a reason to visit and get a free breakfast!

I'm in for Kiawah, at least for the half, if not for the full. Might try to get my daughter to do the full . . . I really loved the half last year. Great shirt, great medal, best post-race food ever. Beautiful course, although I think the full marathon just does a double loop of the half.

REGISTRATION HAS BEEN KNOWN TO FILL UP IN 24 HOURS, SO DON'T DELAY!

Well....i'm thinkin about it! I am going to do my first marathon this year, and I have not decided if I am going to do the Spinx Greenville Marathon or the Kiawah Island. I just moved here from Oregon so I don't really know the story on alot of these races. What do you guys think would be a better choice?? One advantage to Kiawah would be that it is at sea level and really flat whereas Gville is at about 1000 ft and rolling hills....but I live in Gville so.........i dunno.....help!

Kiawah is oe of the flattest races I've run- along with Myrtle Beach.  It's a good first marathon because of that.  The marathon is a 2 loop course, which can get very boring on the 2nd loop.  But they have bike rentals and allow spectators to bike along the course (just not on the path portion) so you can have family and friends do that, which is nice.

Thnx RunnerGirl....man you must have been one of the first members to get that profile name! Ha! Ya...and I believe Kiawah is a little later in the year too so I could have a bit more time to train. Thanks for the help....I was also kinda of thinkin it would be cool to get the Boston Qualifier and Kiawah would be better for that. I am pretty sure it is 3:10 for me, that will be tough, but I think i can do it!

Kiawah is a great BQ'er!

My only warning is that make sure to start up front (within reason of course) if you are trying to BQ and every second counts.  The start is really congested- it's not a corral start and they start the full and 1/2 at the same time.  The roads are narrow and the turns in the beginning get very congested.  It seems like a lot of runners don't place themselves appropriately at the start line- they have pace signs but apparently nobody pays attention to them.  So you could end up behind slower paced runners which will slow you up in the beginning.  But it usually thins out around mile 2 or so.

Ya...definitely a good idea to get up front. I usually get at least in the first three rows for all the road races I do. I always figure that the only guys (or girls) who will beat me, would only really be in that first strong row. And so someone said that registration goes quick so I need to make my decision soon....now I am kinda leaning towards Kiawah. Any others that are popular later this year in South Carolina?

Greenville (which is where I live) is very hilly, but I PRed the half here last year. Went on to do Myrtle Beach and my time was slower by about a minute. So, keep in mind that since you will be training on hills, they may not affect you as much. The elevation is not an issue. I didn't notice an improvement from running at sea level.

Now, if you want a flat flat falt mary, Tybee Island mary (in Georgia) in early Feb is for sure the flattest I've ever seen. Way flatter than Myrtle beach. Myrtle Beach has some slight grades to it, Tybee does not.

I do not know about Kiawah- I've been there but it was so long ago I can't remember!

The course for the Greenville Mary is changing this year and it will ramble through downtown more than in the past. It also will go through Cleveland park.

Good luck with your decision!

I did the Kiawah half last year, and agree with all the comments about the course. runnergirl gave you very good info when she said the start is congested. There's also a significant portion of the run which goes along a bike path, and if you get behind a slower person (such as myself), that's not going to help you timewise.

But it's flat, and last year it was a perfect temperature for running.

Thanks Y'all for the info. I have to start speaking "southern" now that I live in the South. I'm originally from Eugene, OR. I will be making my decision soon, and then there is no turning back!!

And SusanneS, so you are from Greenville huh? So where are the sweet places to run....any good trails besides downtown and Paris Mnt? I am sick of cement! I have only been in Gville for a month so I still don't really know the insider info.

I'm also just lookin for some quick runners to train with for a mary. All this talk about running...I know this is a tri site, and I am going to start training for one next year...I'm just not quick ready to give up on getting some stuff done and droppin my PR's.

Thanks for any info and comments!

Yep- Furman is a great place to run. I like to do my 20 milers there because there is a five mile loop that has a bathroom on the course and I can store water in my car. I understand they have a pretty extensive trail system there too, but I've not yet tried it. I think there is about 3-5 miles of trail. Varied terrain, some shady and some sunny. Beautfiul campus. I highly recommend it. Most runners park in the PAC (athletic building that is at the back of the horseshoe loop that you drive in on) and there are courses marked on the pavement and at the PAC building (outside on the window). Not sure if the five mile loop is marked out there, but it might be on mapmyrun or something similar. I'll see if I can find the names of the roads for you.

There are 2 different 5K routes comletely on campus I believe.

In terms of other trails, I'm still looking myself. Mostly I just run on the roads in the neighborhoods around my house. But I head to furman for runs of 15 miles and up.

Oh and runners to train with. I know there are running groups that leave out of fleet feet sports on Augusta road. They have different pace groups, so you should be able to find one that is your speed. (I am not your speed- not even close). I have seen fast runners out at Furman. Perhaps it is guys from the cross country team out running. I dunno, but some are fassssssttttt.

Oh, and you can also head out to Milliken and company off of Business I-85 in Spartanburg. Their research center sits on a huge campus and there are literally thousands of acres of grass you can run on. I know they hold cross country meets out there sometimes. Not sure how much is marked, but there is a lot of wide open space for you.

One last thing. Tri training doesn't prevent you from PRing. Sometimes the cross training you get from the swim and the bike helps to strength your run.

Just sayin'

There is a sprint tri in Greenville that is filling up. Pool swim (400 m), 15 mile bike, 3 mile run on and off pavement)

Kiawah Island Marathon is becoming an annual thing for us...myself, my hubby and another couple who we train with are all signing up again this year...I'm going to be doing the full and will be pacing my friend who hopes to qualify for Boston.

The past two years we have rented a house (or should I say mansion). This year we are staying with friend's who have a house on the island. Should be fun...looking forward to it!

Thanks SuzanneS! Ya.. I will have to go check out furman for sure....and the place out in Spartenburg sounds interesting too. In oregon, I would say I ran 75% of my runs on soft trails so I miss the dirt under my feet! But man, you said your pace is slower than mine, but if you are throwin down 20 mile runs, you are in a different league. I've never ran that far in my life! My body would probably break down if I tried right now, I definiately would need to work up towards that. But I guess I will ahve to if I am going to run a marathing this year.

Thanks for the tips!

Maybe I'll see you out on the roads someday....I'm sure I will....seeya!

That's what becoming addicted to triathlons will do for you. Ironman training especially. I used to think 12 mile runs were long. Now they are a cake walk. Of course, when your ez long runs put you in the 10-11 m/m range, it's easier to go longer.

I didn't know you could register early. I thought this Friday was the earliest. How did you do it? BTW, the newspaper this morning expected the 1/2 marathon to sell out in 3 days.

You can do early registration if you book a house/condo for the weekend, as well as pasta party tickets and the race registration.

"Those runners wishing to reserve accommodations as well as enter the race may be guaranteed entry today. Please contact the Reservations Department at (800) 654-2924."

I'm in for the half! Would like to do the full mary, but it'll only be a month after IMFL, and being a newbie I'm afraid this is too much to train for/expect my body to do. runnergirl - we have to meet in real life when you come over for Kiawah!

Last full registration was open until October (I think, I checked it around that time)

The half fills up much much faster.

It has filled up already!

A friend is signed up and asked if I wanted to do it and I said sure, so I went to register and the only way to get in now is to do the package which includes 2 nights accomadations + entry into the full for only.............$750.  I think I'll pass this year.  If anyone knows of a way to get in still, I'd love to do, just do not want to pay that much.  Thanks!
