Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 24s
Overall Rank = 140/383
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 15/31
Pre-race routine:

Ate bowl of oatmeal, banana, and cup of coffee two hours before race. Got set up in transition and sat in car and talked to my wife.
Event warmup:

I wasn't going to get in the water prior to the start, but I sure am glad I did. I did not expect such a shock when I went in. I was practically hyperventilating. After a minute or so, I swam some strokes and my breathing settled down and I felt more comfortable.
Swim
  • 07m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am glad I got in early. I was prepared for the cold and just got with the swim. I hung back at the start and ended up going around a lot of athletes. I did look up more this time to swim a good line instead of my usual zig-zag through the course.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to start closer to the front. I passed a lot of swimmers and got jammed up several times.
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

Got my wetsuit stuck on my heels a little. It's just technique. I need to reach down with my hand and flip the last part off my suit off instead of trying to completely remove it with my feet.
What would you do differently?:

See above.
Bike
  • 32m 53s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt good. I could have pushed a little harder on the short low hills though.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was happy with my bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Missed the rack with one of my hoods, but other than that, it went smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 25s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran with a guy and kinda took it easy. I was feeling good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Went down and waded out into the lake until my legs were under water and let them cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Youth! Training! One of those high "zoot" tribikes!

Event comments:

I did this race so I could get an idea of what Steelhead will be like. I wanted to see the water, some of the roads, get a feel for the hills, wind, etc. I raced keeping in mind that I have to do a 3 1/2 hour bike ride yet this weekend or Monday. I thought the race was well run, and the great music at the beginning was right on! I like the specific bike rack locations also. Seemed to be enough room to put your "stuff".

Realy solid race!  I agree, getting in cold water and swimming beforehand, definitely helps one deal with the shock factor.

Great job!

Thanks. I felt pretty good. Probably could have/should have? gone a little harder, but I was trying to race at the pace I want to do Steelhead at. Except I don't think I can bike that fast. If I could, I would be amazed at myself!
