I have not done this race before. I looked at the times from last year, and the bike looks like it's quite hilly. Has anyone done it before and have any thoughts? I read a few race reports here on BT, but would love to hear more. Also, how is the swim in the basin? Basically - any information would be awesome.

Check out the other thread, Camp Pendelton Oly Roll Call or something, I posted the bike/run profiles there.  It's hilly but there are no climbs, I think 2 short hills that will get your attention each way out and back.

Also I think Transition times are included in the bike, so that skews it.

Swim is calm, long azz run to T1, run has a hill at about 2 and 5 that makes the run tough, otherwise flat

Good low key friendly race

This is my first time doing this race and I'm pretty excited. Also with a lot of anxiety because all of my previous race have been sprints. But I'm up for the challenge.

A friend of mine trained really hard for this race but didn't sign up in time. Does anyone out there have an entry that can't attend the race? If he were to get someone else's entry how does that work? Does he have to get someone registered as the same sex and age? He's a male and around 30. If he gets a 50 year old female does he have to start in her wave?

thanks for any information.

Likely no transfers, but you can email the RD directly.  Don't do it "unofficially" as your friend can be banned from racing

Thanks for the information. Incredibly helpful. I read a couple of places that theres a climb straight out of T1, is that correct? Trying to gage if I need to mount my shoes on the bike or not.

Thanks for the information about transfers. Sounds like a lot of possible trouble.

Not that I recall.... Take that back, there's a short climb.....  not really a climb but a hill.  You'll be able to see it because you walk down it from the parking lot to Transition, so you'll know whether it's doable or not.

ETA - just looked at the elevation, it's about a 50 foot climb over a mile, so nothing much to worry about

Hey Chris,

I'm doing this race too, I've also been chatting with you about IMAZ. Hopefully we can get together for some IM training tips.

Hey, I am trying to figure out how to treat this race, as a "race", after which I'll be in pain and recovering (olys always kill me) or train through it.  I'd prefer not to lose the training time.....

I know what you mean. I'm treating it as a race because my 1st oly in May didn't the way I planned so I need some redemption. I actually started my IM 17 week program 6 weeks ago as pre-training so I'll officially start it on 7/28. That should give me enough time to recover. I just want a good race prior to the big day in November. It's more of a mental thing for me but I totally hate missing any training too. Did you start training for AZ yet? What sort of taper do you do for oly's?

I've only done 2 Olys, so I don't really know what I do   Actually, in the past I've just shortened the distances but upped the intensity until a couple days out.

I am doing a 24 week program, first 6 weeks is just to get into the groove and is a little looser, just started another build period.

So are build periods when you get into your speed and hill work? I was just about to look up the build section of my program to get a better idea of what it entails.

No, for me it's just increasing volume during the week, if you look at my blog it increased for three weeks and then backed off one week

After looking at my program it think it's volume for me as well. After reading Jeeps plan description I'm not sure if volume or intensity will make me faster on the bike. My goal is a 20mph IM average on the bike. What have you found to help you get faster on the bike?

For me, more volume and riding with faster people.  I can do 80-100 mile rides all day long at 14 mph, but won't get much faster.  It;s the intervals keeping up with other guys that makes me faster

I am doing a plan I found on the net though, not like jeep who has a plan designed for him

Yeah intervals always seem to do the trick. Did you look at the Advanced IM 17 week plan on BT?

Hey guys,

Can anyone tell me what the security is on the base? I am former military and know that there are things that bases require in order for you to be allowed on the base. I have family and friends that are coming to support me, just need to gage if this will be easy for them or difficult. I cannot see how normal security would be able to keep up with the screening process with a large event such as this.

I too am concerned over the "hills" but figure they are a necesary evil that triathletes overcome, no matter how painful and dreadful they are.

I'm assigned to Wave #5 going off at 08:25. I wish everyone the best and that are your goals are met.

Licence, registration, and proof of insurance is all I think you will need. Now there are a few different gates to go in through and I am sure that main gate will be packed. So depending on where you are coming from you can go through another gate.

Don't lose too much sleep about the hills.  I'm a terrible climber and dread them all the time, but I've done the majority of the bike several times in practice and there really only is one big hill, and it isn't so steep that you can't spin up it.  It'll be over in a few minutes, and then you can enjoy a truly gorgeous ride.

I hear that for the run, there are Marines on the hill that yell at you to keep running.  I fear I shall disappoint them there.

Good luck out there.  You start in the wave ahead of me (I think I'm somewhere around 8:30??).....I'm sure it'll be a fun one.

Marines grunting at you to run huh... never really got that when I was in, they tend to treat their Corpsman with kit gloves... this will be interesting.

I am totally psyched about this Oly, my final of the season. See all of you at the finish line....
