![]() | ![]() Hi, Just wanted to see if there is anyone in the Mountain Home area that wouldn't mind sharing some advice. I am trying to soak up as much info about this whole sport as I can. I would really like someone a little more in the know then I to ask some questions. I am getting ready to do my first mini out on the base and I am a little nervous. Anyone have advice to share?? ![]() | ![]() Complete novice!!! My background is in swimming. I started working out about 6 weeks ago. Right now I am up to 2 miles running (more like steady jog) I say I am at an 11 min mile. (I know that is way slow, but I am working on it. This would be the hardest part for me.) I run 5 times a week. I just started biking. 3x a week. I have not timed myself but can do 5 to 6 miles easy. Since swimming is my forte I have not trained much on this. The swim part of the race that I am going to do is in a pool and not a long distance at all!! This is a MINI TRI. ( 250m swim, 5 mile bike amd 5k run) Since I am just starting, I am not worried about time. I just want to complete it. See if this is something I would like to do and if I like it start training for a Sprint race for next year. I will try to post workouts, but maybe I am making this more complicated then it needs to be at this stage of the game. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Check out some books or look at the resources here. There are plenty of free training plans for the shorter distance races on BT. Sounds like you already have a race planned--I would say that's the first step. Then work on building endurance first which most beginning plans focus on. As your endurance gets up there then you can add on workouts to help with speed. I found a book at the library that had a ton of info for the beginner. And the forums here are helpful too. I usually find the answer to my questions somewhere in the forum Good luck withe everything. I finished my first tri in June and had a blast! |

![]() | ![]() Thanks. Any advice on doing all this in the heat. The race is scheduled to start at 2:00pm. I am trying to read up on nutrition/ hydration. This is a really short distant for a lot of people, but this is the most I have ever done. Again I am training to finish not to win. Because of the time of day, I am concerned about the heat. I usually train in the morning or evening because of work. I am also not a "spring chicken" ![]() |

Here is some stuff I picked up along my learning journey.: There is not such thing as a short distance, just listen to you body, put one foot (arm) in front of the other, it will be great. You should have a gel 10-15 min. before the start and maybe one at one of the transitions in a short race. It has energie and more important are the electrolytes in this heat. Some have caffeine, that helps me. You should eat 1 hour before,so if you drink little bit of water from the pond or lake, you don't get nausea. I drink slimfast, but lots of people cannot do that. If you can , try it before. Do just enough water to feel ok, too much water will stay in your stomach. Gatorade is good, better mix it half with water. If you are hot, put some water over your head or shirt, you want to use your energie running, not cooling down. Wear a running cap, I never did and on my last two races it helped a lot. And if your behind hurts on the bike, stand up on your bike every 10-15 min. for about 10 second ( that one i got from the coach at BT). If you want to ask, i will try to answer the best I can. In my case it is just fear of failing, that gets me to the finish, It is never any other goal. Have fun, Jitka |

![]() | ![]() Thanks! I need all the advice I can get. I did a brick training the other day (Bike 6 miles then ran/walked 3 miles) bike was good but I was really lagging in the run. My legs were ok, but I couldn't get my breathing under control.I felt like I was huffing and puffing the whole 3 miles(even with me walking some). But at least I know I can complete the course even if I walk most of the run. I will let you all know how it goes

New user![]() | ![]() If you are having trouble keeping your breath while doing a brick, here is a tip. Slow down on the bike a bit and just get used to the sensation of running after being on the bike. You are switching muscle groups and it takes a little getting used to. I had this problem when I first started bricks, but it was in the swim/bike transition. I would huff and puff and after a few times of just doing it at a slower pace, I was fine. Just remember, if you are not in it to win it, then take your time and just finish. Enjoy the experience and you will have more fun. |

![]() | ![]() Ok WOW I just completed my first "mini" tri. yesterday. It's funny because I went to bed pretty early(9:00) last night, I was wiped, and now at 3 am my time, I am wide awake and feeling pretty groovy. The first thing that I thought of when I woke up was "Hey, I finished a Triathalon." So ok, in reality it was a very "small" tri, but I finished non the less Lissa PS Thanks for the advice. It did help. |

![]() | ![]() Hey Jeff, I checked out the site. I so could do the short course. If I have that day off of work I think I will go for it. One question though. It says mountain course. All I have is a road bike unless I want to use my son's mountain bike. When they say "mountain course" (stupid question, but) do they mean off road and should have a mountain bike mountain course?? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lillis, I believe they have a short AND long road course. The long course is a big climb, then decend-turn around and repeat back to start/finish area. Very little flat area. You will definitley need a MTB for the mountain course. jeff |
