Age Group Rank = 108/165
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:15 had some breakfast and put my stuff in the car. Picked up my Belle at 4:00 and we drove to Boulder. Got to the site at 5:00, went to transition and set up my stuff.
Event warmup:

Jogged down to the gravel road and back and stretched. Put my wetsuit on and got in the lake and did a little breast stroke and some sighting work.
Swim
  • 33m 26s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

First part of this swim was difficult. We swam right into the sun for about 700 yards. Hard to see where you were going.

I had a great swim. I only got punched one time. Right after the final buoy heading for home I got punched in my right eye and my goggle came off. I put it back on and finished strong. Glad it happened so close to the end. This was the farthest I've ever swam in my life!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I was calm and relaxed and had a good swim. I stayed on course and didn't have any problems!
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Ran and jumped on my bike and took one pedal stroke and my right shoe unclipped and hit the pavement. I had to stop and go back and get it and put it on and then get back on track.

What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing mounting the bike running. Don't think about it so much, just commit and go.

Bike

Comments:

As soon as I got in my aerobars my lats were screaming. The ride out to Old Stage Hill was uphill. I just tried to keep high cadence and not push too hard. Got to the hill and started climbing, and climbing. This thing is brutal. Fun, but brutal. I passed quite a few people that were walking up it. Coming down the other side they had cops with radar guns. If you did more than 35 mph, you got DQ'ed no questions asked. Rode the brakes down that and then hit Left Hand canyon and cruised. At one point on Nelson Road I was doing 38. Long downhill section after the hill made it easier. Then the road back was pretty flat. I just tried to cruise and keep the cadence high and not draft off anyone.

Going up Old Stage I was lucky to do 5 mph. Going down I was flying. I definitely had fun cruising downhill.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed harder on the bike. I was too concerned with drafting and I let up a couple times I was behind people instead of just pushing a bit and passing them. Lesson learned.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Bike dismount was good. Ran into T2 and found my spot. Racked my bike. Helmet off, visor on. Race belt on. Socks on. Out the door! This was a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 58m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

This was just a dry, hot, dusty run. I stopped at each aid station and drank and dumped water over my head. By the time I hit the turn around, I was overheated big time. I just couldn't stay cool. This was all about mental toughness as my legs were ok.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training in the heat to get used to it more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk, lots of water and wet towels. Went into the reservoir and cooled off. Got some food and drink and tried to find some shade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The Heat.

Event comments:

This was my first Oly. I wanted to go 2:50:00 but the baseline goal was under 3:00:00. I did it! I had the best swim ever! First time I've ever swam that far! My bike was good. It was tough, but I had a blast. The run was hot and dry, but a good test. I put it all on the line out there and had a great time. This was a great day!

Great job, and congrats on the swim, especially! Last year, my first oly was only the second time I had ridden 25 miles on my bike, so I can relate...it's nice to know you can do it.

Hey, great job out there!  It was also my first oly - what a race we chose to break into that distance!  For your first swim ever of that distance, you did an excellent job.  And I absolutely know what you mean about the "mental toughness" run - my legs wanted to run faster too but the rest of my body was just not having it in that heat.
