Total Time = 3h 22m 51s
Overall Rank = 228/263
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 30/30
Pre-race routine:

Awake by 3;30 am, shower, eat and leave by 4:30ish fo rthe race. Set up transition area and save a few slots for fellow Cool Kids.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 39m 32s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

I did not hyperventilate this year and this was a longer race than the Mountain man I did in 2007.
What would you do differently?:

This week I start some swim lessons. After 1 1/2 years it is about time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

Forgot the body glide.
What would you do differently?:

I really should learn and practice riding on top of my shoes.
Bike
  • 1h 22m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.00 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was at 7000 ft elevation (approx.) and I had not trained for it. However, my goal was to keep my heart rate down and the bike leg averaged at 132 (spiked at a little over 170).
What would you do differently?:

I averaged 47.7 downhill at one portion and for the most part was a little over 20 mph. However, on one of the steps I was just over 7 mph and the best hill only at 12. it shows that I still need hill focus.
Transition 2
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

ok transition.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn to run without socks on short races to eliminate the rolled sock issues I have.
Run
  • 1h 13m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

The hill was a long way up.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - goal was heart rate and the goal was met! :)
Post race
Warm down:

short walk about to meet people at Focus with stands with fist. followed by cheering on some finishers, a shower, and then the big hello donahue two with their HIM finish (missed paulette as she is just too speedy!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Goal was to use the day as a training day and to keep the heart rate down and work the nutrition plan. I actually had slightly better results than expected for not racing (even if I was 30 out of 30 in my age group)in that I believe that I beat my previus best time on an oly by another minute without trying to. Better to have a different goal to focus on instead of time to make little improvements.

Event comments:

They broke down the finish line at 7 hours (when people were still on the race course) and tore down most of transition about 6 1/2 hours into the race. They ran out of finishers medels for those doing the half - and just seemed to not care at the end of the race that it was not over for the participants yet.

My personal recommendation is to find a different race for you first 70.3. (I did the oly race but they stoped posting results on this race before me or my freinds were listed.)

Nice "training day"

I think they took it all down so early because of the rain/storm...

That was pretty cool making the race a training day. Over the past year you've really put in a ton of time and energy working out. You've been a big inspiration for me. To see a "big guy" do this as well as you is really awesome!!

You're going to be a LOT faster after those swim lessons!!

KEEP GOING!!

Very nice and smart race Jerry.  It sounds like you're really planning your training well and focusing on IMAZ.  Also thanks for being one of the few to call me by my correct name during the race....really helped not blow my cover.

It was great to meet you this weekend and look forward to seeing you at IMAZ if not sooner.

What is this about swim lessons? Does that mean I can't trail you around anymore? Boooo!

Great job out there!! That is a bummer how they tour it all down at the end though!
