I know there has been lots of discussion about this nasty affliction, but here's my question....Have you found orthotics to be helpful or not?

A little.  I started using them after I had been having PF problems for quite some time and I have never had PF since.

I think the Footsie roller (picture) is the best treatment though.

I found orthotics to be extremely helpful.  It took a while to get it right though.  In my experience, working with a Sports Medicine specialiast (even better if they are also a triathlete) was the best solution.  I had severe pf in both feet.  Physical therapy, stretching, rolling and orthotics ultimately solved it.  The physician or PT should also evaluate your running mechanics.  Lots of people also swear by a program challed ChiRunning.

Good luck.  It is a nasty injury. You have my sympathy.

Yes, it is horrible. I am going to run until my tri in early August that I have already paid for, then I think I have to stop. I can barely walk for several hours after my runs. I just dread it....
I don't have medical coverage for physio or orthotics, but am willing to pay if it helps. Consensus seems to be that orthotics are useful. So, after my race I will go back to the chiropractor and be fitted. Until then, ice, and motrin are my good friends.

I too have PF right now. I do have custom orthotics, and they might help some. What seems to work really well for me is standing on a golf ball in my arch and rolling that sucker like there's no tomorrow. It hurts like heck, but really makes a difference in how my heel feels. You can also use a tennis ball, softball, frozen water bottle, whatever...just put most or all of your body weight into it and roll it around your arch. Hope this might help! This injury is the most annoying, painful and persistent of all the injuries I've ever had!

Also consider sleeping with one of those boots on your feet that keeps your foot in a flexed position.

I had it so bad back in January that I had to take 4 months off running. I was able to beat it without orthotics so if it's cost prohibitive, you might want to try some of the other treatments. I finally got over it with tons of calf and PF stretching, in the beginning up to 5 times/day, now 2 times/day. I also use the foot roller and a frozen water bottle and just ice it after long runs. I did the towel bunching for awhile to strengthen it but not anymore. It barely bothers me finally and I'm up to 13 miles on my long runs. Good luck, it is by far the most irritating injury I've ever had so I understand your frustration.

Orthotics and the golfball exercise. Make sure orthotics fit in your running shoes properly!

Orthotics worked wonders as well as a lot of achilles stretching. The other thing that helped was a running shoe that offered more stability.

I think I may have PF.  Are there any "how-to" treat myself websites that details the different techniques? (stretches, rollers, etc.)  I actually have an appointment today, but I'd like to do some research into treatment first.  I know that I don't want to get stuck with orthos.Undecided

Orthotics worked for me, plus the tennis ball therapy (instead of golf ball). Proper shoes a must, too. Nothing wrong with orthotics. They are not the big white old fart shoes. They are custom fit and inserted into any shoe.

You'll only get stuck with orthotics if there's an issue with your feet that need to be corrected. If so, embrace the orthotics -- you're better with them than without them if you need them. Yes, stretch, roll, etc. Your doc will give you advice today.

Well I went to the doc today and the biggest learning point I recieved was to get to a running store.  Preferrebly one that can take a look at how I run/walk to make a recommendation on a good pair of running shoes.  He also told me to stay away from running for an entire month!  Wow....just, wow!  He also gave me a little advice on stretching and then some meds.  Hmmmmm.  I'm not into meds so I don't know how much of them i'll take.  Naproxen Sodium for pain and as an anti-inflammatory solution as well as tramadol.  Wow!  It only hurts when I wake up during the night/morning.

I'll let you know how i'm doing.

Hi...I suffer from severe PF, too. I had a cortisone injection 2 weeks ago...seems to be helping somewhat...even though I know it's only temporary. I have a follow-up visit on Monday to discuss custom orthotics. Right now...I'm willing to try ANYTHING in order to run pain-free...so I'll give the orthotics a shot.

I'm familiar with Tramadol...was on it for over 6 months for low back pain. I've never heard it being prescribed for PF pain, though. Word of caution on Tramadol...it's a synthetic opiate, so even though it's not classified as a true opiate (Vicodin or Oxycontin) it has opiate-like properties, therefore it can be quite addictive (even though doctors claim that it isn't) and have nasty withdrawal symptoms when weaning off. Don't let yourself become too dependent on it. It took me a good long week to get past the withdrawals...and it was NOT fun.
