Pre-race routine:

Not to be believed, but I had to take my husband to the emergency room the night before the race. I considered backing out or doing the sprint distance, but I knew he was in good hands so went for the Olympic distance that I signed up for. Had to get up at the crack-o-dawn because I couldn't pick up my race packet the day before. Decided to do the race with my cell phone just in case. My life has been full of a lot of very tough crises lately and doing tris is keeping me slightly sane.
Event warmup:

Swam a little.
Swim
  • 44m 40s
  • 2 yards
  • 45h 23m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Okay, I decided to take it slow and easy because my two goals were not to hyperventilate and freestyle the entire swim. Yippee! I sang songs, took my time and enjoyed myself. Did not swim fast at all and actually could have continued for another hour without a problem.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try and ramp it up a bit once I was so comfortable. Also, I can't draft because everyone is faster. Would like to someday.
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

At the transition, you run up a steep, short hill. Now with my body type, there is no running up hills. It took forever and the run out was really, really long too which included another uphill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just am not able to run up hills.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 1s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I'll never understand it. I am going about 17-19 mph and then when I get my final time, it's soooo much lower. I know I slowed down for turns and also I am slow when there's even an incline, but I thought my times would be much faster considering my efforts.
What would you do differently?:

Do better with cornering.Inclines I have no control over. Maybe push a little harder, but after bonking at Eagleman at mile 30, I was skiddish.
Transition 2
  • 04m 47s
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run with the bike a little.
Run
  • 1h 49m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 17m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Okay, this just sucked. There were hills up and down on the second part of the run. The first part was okay, but the second part seemed brutal. It was ridiculously hot by the time I got to the run and ran right through pre-storm humidity. My heart rate was up and had no oomph so just mostly walked, plus my feet were killing me.
What would you do differently?:

I suck at running. Tried for years, 4 coaches, kept a log once or twice, did everything everyone told me to do, but alas, no luck.
Post race
Warm down:

I felt very shakey after the race and had to sit down and eat. Not sure if it was the heat, dehydration or not enough calories. I sat for a while and then was able to get up. They had run out of food so bought me a burger from the concession truck. Of course, the race had all but closed down by the time I got to the finish line. I hate that when my wave is last and I miss out on all the fun, awards, camaraderie, etc. That is why I do this sport and when I can't take part, it just blows.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat, no sleep, mental state and the fact that I cannot run at all these days.

Event comments:

A guy died. I didn't find out until aftewards, but it sure put a damper on my experience. Also, I found the race to be very lonely in the last wave. Not one of my favorite experiences since I had to wait hours and hours from when I got to transition until the race started.

Wow... nice job getting out there after a tough time the night before!!   I've been lucky in that the two tris that I've done, I've been in the first or 2nd waves.  It sounds like like a bummer to be in the last wave.. zzzzz.. all that waiting around before you can even start!
