How tricky is that for a GPS unit?

Ok, so I managed to knock my Forerunner 305 off the quick release on the wrist strap last Saturday and didn't notice it till I finally checked 4 miles later to see it if was time to turn around. I went back to the point I thought I'd lost it and there was no sign of it.

Turns out at least 2 honest people came into contact with it before I made it back to where I lost it. Someone had placed it on the drinking fountain behind the gate that I'd bumped on the way to refill my water bottle. Then Dan K. from Olathe (this post is mostly props to Dan) saw it and figured there was a better chance of finding the owner if he took it home and then came back along the trail and left a note with his phone number.

Fast forward to this morning and I stop at the same drinking fountain and see Dan's note. He wouldn't take any reward (I'd picked up a couple of gift cards for iTunes and Starbucks), so I'm going to make a donation to a 5K fund raiser some friends are organizing for lung cancer research in Dan's name.

Also restoring my faith in humanity is the wonderful lady who helped me look along the trial and even offered to loan me her husband's Garmin since he'd injured his knee and wasn't able to train for the time being.

Now that's a good story! Nice way to pay it forward with the donation in Dan's name too ~

Wow crazy! I thought you were going to say that someone went into the menu, found out where you lived, and hand-delivered it. But your story is way cooler!

The same thing happened to me in a race in Maui. It fells off during transition, and I didn't realize it until I was out of the zone. I figured it was gone for sure, but someone found it and turned it in to lost and found. I still really can't believe it.

Nice story. I am glad we still have nice people here in Olathe. I always thought highly of our comunity. Do you ride in Southern Johnson County? 178th, Metcalf, Louisburg....

All the time. Did the JCBC Cider Mill Century last week. Normal route is around Stillwell, Spring Hill, etc.

Heading out to the other side of KC (Liberty) to ride with friends this afternoon for a change of scenery.

Here's a link that has my normal route mapped out by the 305... Bike Route Thread

That's awesome! Go Dan! Go the person who put it on the fountain!

We often have discussions of what to do with high-dollar lost and found on the trails while hiking, and most people agree that leaving a note is the right thing. Less chance someone less scrupulous will come along. Glad to know it works!

Very nice to do the tribute amount, too, and to show up with gift cards in hand. Props to you!

And she was a Swedish swimsuit model and would only accept you rubbing lotion on her back as payment.

Seriously though, great story! Something similar happened to me about 10 years ago and it is so uplifting that it stays with you. We left our wedding picture proofs in a library book at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Anyway, some local businessman called the library and mailed it to them for us to pick up (the library wouldn't give out our addresses). It was so nice of him. Anyway, glad Garmin is home.
