Elite 2661 DC Metro, slowly working my way to NC | Subject: Synchro diving Honestly, I don't really know how this ended up as an Olympic sport, but it's really cool to watch. Question tho - anyone know the purpose of the showers behind the platform? Are they just trying to stay warm? (I doubt it's to get the chlorine off their skin, we ALL know that can last for days, LOL.) |

6 | Subject: RE: Synchro diving It's very upsetting how they cheated for the Chinese and screwed the Americans. On every single American dive, the first thing they say is "good, BUT." On the second to last American dive, one diver made a second splash and the commentator went on talking about it like it was the worse thing you could do in the competition and that it wouldn't get the score that they needed. Other than that little splash, the synchro was perfect. They get a 77 I believe (or a 70 I can't remember but it was way too low).
The Chinese come up next (or maybe one dive later) and they are COMPLETELY out of sync. One diver is like a foot and a half higher than the other diver and hits the water much later. Plus the diver that hit the water first also had a second splash. It wasn't as high as the American's splash but it wasn't a perfect entry. They get an 86. Now granted, I'm not a diving expert by any means, but I do know what the hell synchronized means and what the Chinese did wasn't in synch at all but they score nearly 10pts higher than the Americans.
Then the Germans come along to finish off the Americans. The Americans would have medaled (missed it by 4.5 pts) if it weren't for that job the judges did on them.
Also, the Chinese women were heavily favored in the synchro diving as well as the gymnastics. Anything that has to do with the judges keeping score they are excelling in. The judges are all international right? They're still favoring the Chinese. Edited by cowboys 2008-08-11 8:15 PM |

The events where there are judges are the easiest to fix/pay people off/have bias, etc. In a pool, the fastest person wins. No questions asked. But in gymnastics, diving, anything where you are scored on technique, it's all subjective, and therefore easier to play to certain biases. |

I don't know. I guess because the judges aren't Chinese that things would be a little more fair but I'm obviously wrong. It's bad enough that they're getting away with allowing underaged girls to compete in the gymnastics. It's very possible to have a baby faced 16 year old, but when you have 3 or more 16 year olds that look 12 on the same team, that's a bit suspicious to me.
If this is 16, what the heck did they look like at 12 and 13? And this article says that all sources pre-Olympics reported some of them as 14. So the Chinese government issued them fake passports. http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/beijing-games/story.html?id=715967Don't ge me wrong, I'm not being anti-Chinese at all. I'm just anti-cheating. Edited by cowboys 2008-08-11 9:41 PM |

I just looked at the final score. If your country is participating in the event, you shouldn't be allowed to judge. |

I'm just anti-cheating. Agreed. While it tends to be the case that serious gymnastic training stunts their growth and development (even the American girls - they all have squeaky voices and haven't hit puberty), the fact that their "passport" says that they're of age means CRAP. OF COURSE those documents could easily be falsified!! Now they said yesterday that the girls had to turn 16 in the calendar year, so some could very well be 15. However, the claim, as you said is that the girls are as young as 12. Which is just plain wrong. |

I saw the Japanese judge giving 4.5s and 6.5s when I thought the dives werent' THAT bad. I have to say it's not easy to judge when everything happens so fast. Oh yeah, the girls look WAY younger than 16. I am Chinese and I look older than that when I was 16. Edited by D.K. 2008-08-11 10:18 PM |

Perhaps it's different for different sports? There is a 14-year-old diver, and there have been young swimmers for years... |
