Subject: RE: 325mile swim!Benoit Lecomte and Guy Delage both swam across the Atlantic Ocean. You read that right. They swam across the Atlantic Ocean.
There have been skeptics of Delage's claims but in 1994 he did, in fact, enter the ocean off the Cape Verdes Islands near Africa pushing a small surfboard-like raft and was in the water almost continuously for the next 55 days until he washed up on the island of Barbados where an islander promptly called the police on him. The islander reported he had "found a drunk man who claimed to have swum from Africa to Barbados." Once police confirmed his identity he was hailed as a hero.
Delage holds a number of remarkable ultra-endurance sailing and swimming records. His 55 day crossing of the Atlantic was done solo and unsupported. He drank a special liquid diet stored in his surfboard-raft that also held navigation equipment and shark repellant that he reported "did not work".
Benoit crossed the Atlantic in 72 days with no raft but did have a support boat with him. His crossing took place in 1998. |
