Just to let y'all know:

Out of an abundance of caution, the packet pickup will be held in the hallway of South Lakes High School on Saturday Sept. 6th from 11 am until 3pm.

As for contingency plans, the Reston triathlon is a sanctioned race by USAT and must follow the USAT rules. We will continue to watch the weather and the Board of Directors will decide the safe and appropriate course of action and post our decision on our web site. Please check the website frequently.

Reston Triathlon, Board of Directors

Yeah, someone posted the link yesterday. I keep checking it to see whether or not they decide to can the race or turn it into a du. I'll take some precautionary doses of antibiotics if it means I don't have to run bike run. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but with my hip the way it is, a 10K is all I want to do...er, I mean, du...and such.

Why would you take antibiotics?  You like killing friendly bacteria in your body?

Hehe, no, it was a joke.

kimmitri408 - 2008-09-05 6:08 AM well i don't know what the official word is on the distances - but i know that while the volunteer meetings for saturday are canceled, they still asked us to show up on sunday at 7am ready to work.

Thanks for volunteering - I did this last year and had a great time.  Hopefully, there will be some food left by the time I get there as I will probably be one of the last ones finishing.

FYI although I'm guessing most of you have gotten this:

Although not invited, Hurricane Hanna has decided to crash the 25th annual Reston triathlon.  The Directors have been monitoring, and will continue to monitor the path of the bandit hurricane.  It appears that the heavy rains expected on Saturday, will diminish substantially by evening.  The Directors have made arrangements to clear the courses of any debris if possible and if needed, our amazing volunteers stand ready to work well into the night to ready the course. It is our hope and expectation that the triathlon will go on as planned with slight modifications if needed.

Packet pick up will be inside South Lakes High School on Saturday; however you will not receive your timing chip until Sunday morning at the swim start at Lake Audubon.

If necessary, the Directors will make the decision to delay the start.  Please check the Reston triathlon website (http://www.restontriathlon.org)  frequently for updates although please be patient.  We will have a better idea of what will happen after the bulk of the storm passes.

Rumor from packet pick up will that it will be a duathlon tomorrow.  Paul (Grems8544) is trying to find out the details.  Hopefully there will be something on the website soon.  I guess it would make the race a one transition area race.

If you were guessing how do you think would that work??? Run (how much?), bike (23), run (6.2)? Or, just a bike & run?

Update #2 - du with a 2.5 mile run, one transition area and unknown start process.  He didn't say anything about bike, so I'm assuming 2.5 run, 22.4 bike, 6.2 run.  Also it probably won't start on time.  Watch the website for more info.

I just came from packet pickup.

It is a Du.  2.5 mile run, starting from the school.

1 transition area.

Normal bike route, except start and stop at school.  Acknowledged that this will add 1/2 mile or so.

Normal 10K run at end.

Unknown if will start at 7 a.m.; advised that I watch the web site.  As of 3:17 p.m. the website is the same as it was earlier in the day; e.g., no updates.

pgd

Dammit! I don't want to run any more than I actually have to, with all the hip issues I've been having. F*CK.

Great - this was supposed to be my first Oly too. I wasn't gonna be fast, but at least I could have said I finished an Oly.

I know.  Last weekend at this time I was nearing a base camp at Mt. Whitney in CA @ ~13,200', and spent all day Sunday hiking another 1500' UP then a mile+ down in vertical change over 5 miles from the peak (~approx 20deg grade).  My legs and knees have been shot all week, although I *thought* I was in pretty good shape.

The idea of running 8.6 miles or so tomorrow does not thrill me, even if it is split up.  Not sure if I'll race without the swim leg; I'm bummed.

One more thing; the person at the front desk of packet pickup thought that the 1st run will start according to your swim wave start, but wasn't sure.  I asked as I went around to each station and the volunteers either didn't know or said (more or less) the same thing.

Regards,

pgd

Anyone know what the swim wave starts are?  I didn't see anything posted or in the packets.  Just wanted to see how many folks will beat me onto the bike...  Foot in mouth  I knew I bought that new patella strap for a reason.  Well, I guess on the up side for me, this wasn't a scheduled "A" race and I still have Make-a-Wish to look forward in 2 weeks...

It is on your bag, there is a sticker that has your name/age (which is wrong for most people by 2 years) and swim wave.

Saw this on the TRIRATS Yahoo group:

the reston triathlon will still go on assuming hurricane hanna does not do anything unpredicted. the swim is cancelled. there is too much debris, surface and submerged, in the lake and it is unsafe. the triathlon will consist of a 2.5 mile run, followed by the bike, followed by a 10K. there will be one transition area at south lakes high school. the website will be updated as soon as i call the plumber to help me get the 3 inches of water out of my basement.

I wonder why everyone's age is wrong? I mean, luckily, it still puts me in the righ age category, but they've had our information since February - not quite sure how they could mess that up.

My calculations on the bike distance is 23.5 miles with the start/finish being in the same spot.

Depending on the mount/dismount point it will be anywhere from 1.1 miles to 1.2 extra miles.
