I am schedule for my first sprint in 4 week.  I have finally built up to the distance in the pool.  The race is a 1/3 of a mile swim.  So I figure (1600 * .333)= 533 yards.  Today I swam 625 yards in the pool and yes I was tired!  So my question, should I keep practicing this distance or should I push more yards?  I was thinking I should practice my stroke at this point.  But I need some suggestion of how much margin I need to build.  I only had 1 open water swim at this point.  And may be only able to get 1 more in.

What should I do?

Not sure....Your logs do not show anything. If all you are doing is straight swimmin for 600+ yards i would suggest to do drill and ad more total distance. This will improve the way you feel after your race.. You can definately finish now but it is just a matter of how complete you want to be at the end

Just my opinion

If it's in a pool, you should definitely train over-distance. Open water is much more difficult. Really try to get that other open water swim in, and go slightly over the distance then if you can (say, 600 yd or more b/c weather/water conditions on race day can be more difficult).

Try to build your pool swim up to 750, at least. Four weeks is also plenty of time to work on your stroke (absolutely get a coach or a very advanced swimmer to help you, if possible, and as soon as possible so you can practice the next few weeks).

I did my first sprint last week and was thankful I doubled my training distance in the pool versus the OWS distance. I was much more confident and didn't get fatigued against the swell and chop. It was a 400M swim and I was training 850m in the pool. Also, I ramped up from swimming 50m and dying to 850m relaxed in about 4 weeks thanks to the advice I got here at BT and following the TI drills. You can do the same with spending time in the pool, at least 3x per week.

Check out the 0-1650 plan (http://ruthkazez.com/SwimWorkouts/ZeroTo1mile.html).   Many of us have had great success with it.  And think, by the time your tri gets here you'll already be swimming a mile in the pool.  That'll give you great confidence on the 500yd swim.

I used to train by just swimming whatever distance the race was, and adding to it. So if if was a 500 yd swim, I'd swim 750.

Now I have been concentrating more on swimming drills and a continuous long swim once a week and have alot more considerable gains than the previous method.

If a swim is 500 yards long, I know I am better trained for that by swimming 5 x100 yd sprints, than always going out and only swimming 500 yds.

Exactly what I would say.  You are better served doing most of your swims as shorter sets focusing on really good form then to just go out and swim continuously.

I've swam about 1/2 less this year than I did last year, but with more focused and consistent work I knocked 2 minutes off of my IM swim time.  Once again, on a lot less yardage.

The race is a 1/3 of a mile swim.  So I figure (1600 * .333)= 533 yards.

To start, you got a math issue here. 1 mile = 5280 feet = 1760 yards. 1/3 miles = 586.667 yards.

And if it is an open water swim then you can throw any sort of accurate measurement out the door ...... OWS are notoriously mis-measured.

TI drills x2.  Within a week of starting them I was swimming a mile nonstop.  Before that, 200 yards was about my max.  Started swimming "for real" in february did 2 miles with 2000 yards straight last weekend.  4 weeks is totally enough time, you'll kill the swim no problem with 3-4 days a week in the water.
