Overall Rank = 360/581

Age Group Rank = 49/63
Pre-race routine:

Since this was my first Tri, there was no routine to follow. I choked-down 1/2 a bagel with peanut butter and a 1/2 a banana. I needed more than that but it's the best I could do! Next time the nerves will be less frantic and I'll be able to power-up better.
Event warmup:

I swam to first buoy and back - fast pace (chasing MAV) on the way out slower pace on the way back. I did a little stretching, too.
Swim
  • 10m 59s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was kicked, grabbed, bumped and I did a little foot swatting myself; over-all I'm very happy with the swim. My true in-water time was under 10 minutes and that's something I could not be more proud of - next time I'll actually RUN to T1 to shave off that extra time :)
I think I inadvertently put myself in the optimal draft situation because I felt really strong and steady!
What would you do differently?:

PUSH HARDER - I really can swim (even though I took my first stroke 10 weeks ago!) and I need to make every second in the water count. I thought I was doing the right thing by following someone else's bubble but when I slap their feet more than once it means I need to GO AROUND them :)
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Everything was good - I started to take my bike out before I put my bike shoes on but that was quickly resolved - come on - it was my first T1 :)
What would you do differently?:

I'm sure I can go faster but I didn't want to forget anything! Damn those nerves!
Bike
  • 47m 59s
  • 11.8 miles
  • 14.76 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good and ready for the bike- HR was a little higher that I like but that's just because I was so HAPPY I kicked-ass in the water. Getting out in the second wave probably helped a lot with racer-traffic. There was, unfortunately, a lot of vehicle traffic on the 'challenge' portion - it was hard to pass going up the hill with all the cars. I passed a lot of people and that was great!
What would you do differently?:

PUSH HARDER - I knew I was holding back for the run. I think I would have rather tried to gain more time here instead of saving for the run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

s m o o t h
other than pulling out the tissues and blowing my nose (yes, I knew I would need them) what's a girl with allergies to do?? I didn't have sleeves or a shirt to wipe the snot on... (and no one needs to see my snot-rockets!!)
What would you do differently?:

not put visor on upside down... maybe just grab whatever i'm putting on my head and put it on while running... again, leave the nerves at the door!
Run
  • 35m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm so happy with my overall race that I can't self-deprecate too much but HELLO! this is obviously where I need to get it together! As previously mentioned I started swimming not to long ago - I've been putting one foot in front of the other for a long time now so the swim was my main focus during training - it's all about balance and I'm ready to give equal parts to each discipline.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster!

I don't regret anything because I got to run with MAV and that had a positive impact on my run time :)
Post race
Warm down:

a what?? I need to work on this because I'm a bit achy today (but maybe that was climbing up and down Gillette Stadium and/or jumping up and down after each play)

The beer and the banana made me feel pretty good so I'll keep that in the mix!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

NERVES NERVES NERVES

Event comments:

I couldn't have asked for a better day - Max created a fantastic event.
With the support of the Max peeps and the BT family I felt completely prepared!

Thanks to MAV for the sleep-over, KathyG for her words of wisdom and the newbie BT-ers for helping me realize that I'm not alone with my bag-o-nerves.

Wow!!! Fantastic job!!  I'm so impressed with your times and you definitely kicked my in the run.  I am so slow! And that hill was not a hill, it felt like I was climbing a mountain on a treadmill.... just staying in one place and it never stopped!  (I agree with you about the traffic... it made the hill much harder because you couldn't always pass when you really needed to.)  See you at Buzzards Bay!

Hey Lisa!  Great to meet you on Sunday w/ Aslirg at the race.  You did an AWESOME job!  congrats, you are a triathlete! so, are you hooked now?  (it's addictive, believe me!)

By the way, my two cents - 'snot rockets' are definitely allowed and encouraged during racing.  Just don't hit anyone else when you do them!

Yeah Lisa! Great job- congrats! Your swimming is so great- I am so impressed with it since you just started a few months ago. Very cute, photos, too. I had my beer after the race and then went home and slept- it put me right to sleep =)

Good luck at Buzzards Bay- maybe I can come out to cheer you on?

Awesome.  Just awesome.  You're allowed to be nervous -- you're only a tri-virgin once!  And some of those NERVES never go away, but next time, they'll feel familiar and give you an edge, a heightened sense of your surroundings, and you'll see yourself going faster, passing people, and having a truly great race.  Just wait, you'll see!

2 weeks till Buzzards Bay, eh?  You'll do great there!  1/3mi swim will feel like nuthin'

Just kick out your strides on the run and think "fast feet" as your mantra.  You can do it!

You just proved it yourself.

Cheers, -Sunny
